Got picked up at 9am by the tour guide dude and jumped in the back of the pick-up. I was the last pick up which, for me, is probably a good thing. There were 6 of us in the back going on the trip and we all introduced each other. There was an Aussie chick called Linda, 2 Irish lads and 2 Dutch guys, one who had a Dennis Bergkamp shaped head, I thought so anyway, but being Dutch made it even more so.
We travelled for about one hour to a market to stock up on essential supplies, water and sugar intake. I also noticed at the market that they had deep fried chicken feet! Mmmmm, but I decided on a bunch of bananas instead.
We then headed out for another hour or so to the outer jungle. From then on it was on foot the rest of the way. We met up with another group of 5. Pete from Bedford, a southern fairy, a lad called Mick from Sheffield who looks like Bentley and his missus and 3 people from Montreal in Canada, French people!!
It was time to get trekking into the jungle. After an hour or so we got to a village, well about 4 bamboo huts, and stopped for lunch. Fried rice for a change. Had a 30 minute break then got back to it. This time we walked for about 3 hours in the midday sun, sound, before eventually arriving at the Long Neck hill tribe village at about 3pm. I was knackered but in the 100 degree plus heat it's always going to take it out of you.
I led on a bench to rest my eyes and must have nodded off for about half an hour. I must have needed that because I was okay after that. Whilst talking to the guides one of them vanished for about 5 minutes but then came back with a snake in his hand, minus the head but still writhing due to the nerves! He said, "We cook this later, and try it yes!" Cool. And to say I pussied about trying a prawn.
We eventually met the hill tribe with massive necks when they returned back to the village, got some random snaps then had tea. It was some sort of Thai chicken curry I think.
I decided on a power hour after tea as I was f***ed from the walking and heat. Then we went and sat round the fire drinking Chang in the middle of nowhere, stars in the clear sky and well peaceful, it was great.
The fire had been going a good hour so it was time to get the snake cooking. We tried it in some sort of spicy sauce and also just barbequed straight of the fire. It was quite tough but similar to chicken. We sat round the fire until about 11pm but it felt like 4am because there is nothing like electric or mod-cons. Then decided to call it a night and retreat to my bed in a little bamboo hut in the middle of a village tribe out in the depths of the jungle.
