Bryce National Park has got to be one of my favorites. The first thing we saw as we approached Bryce was the arch over the road in the Red Canyon that we had to drive under. It only got better from there.
Our campground was really nice. It was among some large pine trees and as we checked in the lady told me that it would get cool enough at night that we might want a bon fire. Come to find out we were at 8000 feet above sea level so it did not get real hot in the day and at night it cooled down to about 50 degrees. I could have stayed here several days enjoying the park and the surroundings.
Then we drove into the National park. As you drive in it looks just like any other wooded park. High grass, slopping hills and pine trees. But then you turn into a short overlook road and get out and walk to the ledge, what you see is so amazing and unexpected. I stood and listened to the song "How Great Thou Art" and just cried over the beauty of what God had made.
I thought all we could do was look, but then I saw people way down between the hoodoos. Of course we had to hike down too. The down was a little easier then the back up but it was well worth the journey.
That night we went back to the park for a star gazing program with the rangers and large telescopes. The fact that Bryce is far from any citys of size make it a good place to see the stars since there are no other lights to interfere. They set up three large telescopes, one directed to the moon and we could see the craters very clearly. The other two were focused on Saturn and Jupiter. This was simply amazing! We cold see the rings of Saturn through the telescope. It was so amazing, I got in line twice and looked 2 times because one turn was not enough. Then when we looked at Jupiter, we could see the rose colored strips on the planet and 3 of its multiple moons.
Everyone should try to come see Bryce in person. It is one of God's most amazing pieces of art.
