Today is our last day at Hervey Bay!!! We ended up extending our stay for a couple of days just because the caravan park and Hervey Bay are so relaxing, plus we wanted to try catch some more fish!!!
The last few days have been uneventful. We have done our chores and Boo's schooling in the morning then headed down the beach, either for a swim or fish in the arvo after lunch. Hervey Bay is a great destination to unwind and do nothing. The bay is great to let the kids swim and to have a go at fishing. Have suprisingly enjoyed our visit here.
On Sunday it was father's day and we did our traditional pancakes for breakfast. The girls gave Marty a fishing reel and filleting knife and also a couple of hand made cards we'd done the day before. After lunch we headed down to the pier for a fish (the blog photo!), the pier is so long!! Did well catching a few, kept two sand whiting to take home. Everyone was very excited to be taking the fish home to fillet and eat. It was a first for us all, the catch, kill and cook thing. Marty did pretty well filleting the fish in the 'bragger's inn'. By the time we'd finished filleting and scaling them we had the portion sizes a bit bigger than 4 fish fingers. Anyway, we coated them with flour and pepper and pan fried them in butter. We all had a try except for Meg, even Marty!!! Everyone knows Marty doesnt eat fish so was quite shocked when he said he'd give it a go. Anyway they tasted beautiful. Will definately be doing this a bit on the trip. Marty said he had had a great day, and it was great to spend it together relaxing and having fun.
The caravan park is great with alot of permanent sites, therefore no noisy rif raf and everyone looking out for one another. Have met a few nice "nomads", John and Joan and a kiwi couple. John and Joan were lovely, they loved chatting with the girls. Found myself amused as Marty enjoyed tinkering on John's car with him a bit. Marty and l both agreed that John reminded us of my Pop Hindson. We said good-bye to them on Monday.
Marty had woken up on Monday morning saying his upper inner leg was sore and he thought something might have bitten him. Well by Tuesday there was a huge lump with redness where the bite had been and he started to limp a little it was that sore. Went to the dr's and got some antibiotics so hopefully it will clear up before we attempt the Cape. We think it might have been a white tail spider?
Anyway, today we had another fish on the beach in the afternoon while the girls played with their buckets building sand castles. Score today was Bell 4 Marty 1!!! Yes l lead the race again with 3 whiting and my first flathead. Now the score might be good but the sizes were appalling!! All were bait sized and were thrown back.
Looking forward to the next leg with our plan to make our way to Cairns by Saturday for a few nights before heading to Mt Carbine to dump the van to start Cape York. Cant believe a week from now and we will hopefully be in the daintree national park (thats if Marty's leg behaves)!!!!
