After a grotty weather day yesterday we wake up to sunshine, so much so it could well be time for shorts again! A slow start to the morning we decide that staying in Timaru, which is a beach town may be the best plan! After all we could go and see the Little Blue Penguins again!!! Especially Percy whom I have become very attached to!! So there we have it a freedom camp we discovered not 5 mins away from the penguins and a sunny day to walk along the coast, done deal!!! We park the van for the day in the Bay car park because you can't go into the camping car park till 4pm. We had a lovely stroll along the coastal walk and return to the town to get some lunch. Four or five shops later and three or four bargains later we end up in The Copper Cafe and Bar, a wide menu and reasonably priced.... We both plunge for the beef roast and OMG what a roast it was... The meat, veg, roasties cooked to perfection and gravy to die for (not often I say that about someone else's roast!!!). Satisfied we head back to Bruce to transfer to the freedom camp so we can rest our dinner and ready ourselves for another penguin watching evening.... To our horror there is a fence up with a sign saying 'closed' due to resurfacing and building work, damn! We end up having to stay at a spot around the next bay overlooking the sea but now a 40 min walk back to watch our penguins, but that didn't stop us and at 8pm we set off towards Marine Parade to be entertained for a few hours. Although a sunnier day, it was definitely a colder evening and we managed to stay for a few hours before we sadly left our 'new friends and favorites' the Little Blue Penguins featuring the star of the show Percy...my favorite little character! We both seemed like experts being there a second night as we could tell others where to spot them and be the protectors of them, telling people to not climb on rocks or go too close or use flash etc, some people have no common sense!!! The walk home warmed us up enough to tuck down for the night, tomorrow we move onto our last destination on our epic adventure around New Zealand. :((
