Day 44: 13/02/13
This morning I was just thinking about getting up when a call came at twenty past six. It was for yr 7 in a school I was in before. So I had plenty of time to get there.
When I went to the office they have me a year 3 class instead which I preferred. I had taken a yr 2 class in the school last year and I had some of the kids again. They had mixed up the classes so I didn't have all of them.
The teacher had some work left- an English cutting and pasting exercise about certain and less certain modal verbs- must, may, etc. They also had handwriting to do. It mentioned reading on the timetable but they didn't seem to know what they should be reading so they did some silent reading and finished a Valentines day picture the teacher had given them the day before.
One guy was called out to the office in the morning and when he came back after break he said he had been drawing pictures with the social worker lady that had been at his house the evening before. There's obviously something going down in that house!!
After break we played a Maths game. The teacher had a Maths worksheet left for them which they flew through. Then they were supposed to do Maths groups and they all seemed to know what they had to do until they sat down with their resources. They just started messing!! I was in the middle of sorting them out when two guys had an argument about who's turn it was to roll the dice and they went for each other. One was much stronger and the other lad bawling crying. He had started it though. We sorted it all out and abandoned the maths groups fairly quickly and chatted about Ireland and listened to the tin whistle instead. They were very good for that!! When I was talking they weren't too bad but when they were supposed to work ahead on their own or work in groups they were awful noisy!
After break the teacher said they were to work on their sea horse collage. Unfortunately for me they were all I different places on their collage and some needed paint. I let them off as it was only one colour and they were fairly good with it. When they were packing up, two boys were puttig away dice. One guy was pretending to keep the dice to play with and the other guy was giving out to him and decided to go and hit him. This was the same guy as earlier!! I had to hold him back until he calmed down, all over a few dice!! He's a cross little fella but the other guy was rising him to see what he'd do!!
When I had them last year the guy that was fighting ran away when they were at swimming!!
I was glad that day was over anyway!! They were fairly chatty and cheeky, much more than most of the classes I've been in over here, but probably no more than at home! The work the teacher left was fairly vague and because of that the room was quite chaotic which led to them fighting - maybe I won't try to follow the teachers plan all the time!!
I went into town afterwards and walked around Southbank and had some food. I stopped along the river on the way home and read for a while.
I chatted to Shell for a good while on Skype this evening. None of us had any major news I don't think, but we'd a good catch up!!
I was supposed to wash clothes today and specifically asked for dollar coins when I was getting change, but then realised late in the evening that I had no washing powder!! Oh well, the clothes will have to stay dirty another day!!
