I know the photo is out of focus but somehow it just sums up what it has been like living in Chbar Mon and Cambodia.
Yesterday I was given a formal farewell thank you party from the POE. It was grand, slightly scary and OTT. It was also unnecessary as I feel they have given me far more than I could ever have given them. I cannot thank all the staff at the POE in Kampong Speu enough for their help, support and friendship.
In the evening my English Class and Bunthorn went for a BBQ which was much more up my street and great fun.
When I went back to the house I had to open all the presents - they were sensitive to my need to get them home and most were small but in a large package!!
This morning a funeral woke me - they start at 4.30am (something I will not miss) so up I got. Decided not to shower - It is cold (17c) which believe me now feels cold - heaven help me when I get home. Back to the shower - I have no hot water in the house and I could not face a cold one. Usually it is nice as the sun warms the water to a comfortable level. This morning I thought no.
Checked the house again - why do you do that - every room was empty except for the living room that contained all my bags. But check it I did. Then the family came around to say goodbye - tears were shed and Bunthorn turned up. We then stood around for half an hour while the van driver assured us he was just leaving!!
In we got - Marc got the very back, with the tailgate left open so he could see out!! Gertrude got the middle seats, she needed to twist a bit to fit in but she managed it. All my bags, computers, mosquito nets and water filters were thrown in and I was left with one seat at the front.
We then went to collect Bunthorn’s stuff from his room. Typically for Cambodia we had to go through the funeral to get to his room. No-one turned a hair as we walked though carrying bags, fans, sleeping mats etc. I was pleased that the main part of the ceremony hadn’t started and really it was only the music and people milling around.
My seat was still left clear - it is amazing just how much stuff can just disappear into these vans.
Just as we left the staff of the Early Childhood department turned up to say goodbye again.
I usually hate goodbyes but this one has been very special.

Chris & Rog It is amazing how quickly the year has gone and how easily you have become used to a totally different way of life. Home will feel strange and cold. Look forward to catching up. Have a fantastic Christmas, love to all the family xx
