Started the day swimming in the pool of a hotel in one of the best cities in the world - my opinion only but I can't imagine there are many who hate Singapore.
Left the hotel at 11.00am in a taxi that was not driven by a mad man and who did not over charge me. In fact it was $4 cheaper than the ride in, so I had enough Singapore dollars for a coffee at the airport. I love that airport within half an hour of leaving the hotel I was in the departure lounge drinking that coffee.
At 1.35pm exactly we took off and arrived in PP 10 minutes early. I now have a visa that means I can come and go so I was outside the airport within 15 minutes of landing. So far so good.
I had decided that going into PP just to come out again was silly so I took my life in my hands and crossed the road so that I could hail a van. Crossing the road was interesting. There were two places where there were pedestrian lights but sadly there were railings stopping you from getting to them!! In the end I just crossed when it looked clearish.
I arrived at the other side to be greeted by a Moto Dop driver who offered to take me ...... I explained in fluent sign language I wanted a van for highway 4 so he found me a seat (I mean he found me a chair to sit on) and he went out into the road looking for a van. The first 5 were going on to highway 3 (Kampot) but eventually a van that looked full stopped and in I climbed. Yet again I was sitting between two seats, this is actually more comfortable than sharing a seat. They only stopped to allow another 4 on. (I was pleased to note they were displaying their insurance certificate!!)
On the seat behind me sat Jon who has invited me to stay with him if ever I go to the coast. He was great as he explained what was happening along the way. As usual everyone on the bus knows how old I am, that I do not have children but they do think I have a husband!!
I was back in my house within an hour of landing at PP airport. I am not sure I would recommend that way of travelling to visitors from the UK but I felt comfortable (ish) and completely safe at all times (once you accept that Cambodian roads are never that safe whatever transport you are in.)
Singapore and Cambodia could not be more different. One oozes money, is clean and easy to walk around. Even the air smells fresh and as for the environment it is just fabulous. However people are much the same good and bad everywhere. In Singapore there were mad drivers that actually worried me more than the Cambodian ones because there most observed every rule going. In Cambodia there is so much kindness with people who are willing to find me a seat while they stand in the sun - to find me a pineapple, van or just about anything else.
I will visit Singapore again but I am happy to live in Cambodia.

Chris & Rog When we went on our honeymoon in 1988 (so long ago) we had a few days in Singapore, it was Rogers favourite place in our trip to the far east. We have seen programmes about how Singapore has moved on in the last few years & we have both said it would be worth a return trip. You have just confirmed our thoughts on what an amazing place it is. Did you have a Singapre sling?
Liz No slings but it is well worth a visit - just great. I will go again while I am here.
Sue Love the Singapore photos, Liz.
