Mortonhampstead to Street
70miles
Accomodation very comfortable, left about 0830.
Weather bit overcast.
Some great downhill sections in Exeter but also the odd hill or 5, no flat.
Navigated through Exeter ok and stopped near Broadcast for cuppa
Then is was great cycling for several miles, flat!
Down a very narrow lane we met a van and had to get off bikes and squeeze in hedge to pass.
Uphill to top of Black downs then fast along the top and super fast to Corfe. Stopped at pub for lunch, no beer for us!
Eventually got to Street. We had booked a hotel and Simon went off to his AirBnB. Great Italian restaurant providing the much needed pasta!
LeJoG Blog June 4th: Day 3Left Moretonhampstead at 8.30 after a great nights sleep and a fantastic breakfast. Really nice to have Simon LeGood along with us for the day (and part of tomorrow). He's got his lightweight road bike, so makes everything look so easy. Definitely an easier day even though we covered over 70 miles, and we are already feeling the benefit of those Cornish hills. A really exhilarating downhill stretch of over 2 miles into Corfe (not the castle one) was the highlight, although as we arrived at the pub for lunch we watched a daredevil stunt pilot strutting his stuff for the Corfe Carnival. One really amusing incident. As we laboured up a long hill with me at the rear sweating profusely, a Somerset local in a battered Mercedes waited patiently for me to finish toiling up the hill. As I arrived puffing and panting he wound down his window and smiled toothlessly at me,
"Wor nuffa noo?" he asked, so I just said "Yeah, John o Groats" and carried on.
Only later as we consulted the Somerset English Dictionary did we translate his comment as "Warm enough for you?"
He must be a worried man!In Street tonight, with a relatively straightforward 68 miles to Monmouth, crossing the Severn road bridge at about 48 miles, tomorrow. Simon leaves us in Bristol to head back to London on the train. Thanks for your company Simon!
