Eden Project to Mortonhanpstead 61 miles
Well was never going to be an easy day.
The route book said hard, Martin said hard and Strava said 6000+ ft of climbing.
We departed from the container at 0730.
As we left Steve found that the remote handset was for the noisy air con and not the TV, shame as it was somewhat annoying.
The Cornish hills seemed never ending and a break in Looe was most welcome. The coffee stop at a bakery was great value, especially the Chelsea bun/cake!
We had a couple of chain ferry crossings with the Torpoint into Plymouth being the last.
It was a long grind out of the city with loads of traffic.
Once at Yelverton it got quieter.
Finally we reached Princetown.
We met a hardcore family who were off road cycling + camping with a 6yr old and a dog in a panier bag.
Steve asked if it was downhill to Mortonhampstead! Umphhh
To be fair it was a great cycle from Princetown, the weather was fantastic and there were some very fasr sections but what goes down......
Eventually we met Simon who had travelled from London to join us for a few days
The accomodation is a great cottage but only time for a shower before dinner at 7pm
We were meeting Stephen and Beth great food and Beth was given a bag of excess stuff to get back to Witney sometime.
LeJoG Blog June 3rd: Day 2Really hard day today. Dug a tunnel and escaped our POW camp by 0730 hours. 5 miles to the official start, which is across the River Fowey by chain ferry and then straight up! Absolutely no way could anybody cycle it (except Martin Butler?). A lot of similar terrain to Day One follows, as we drop into the lovely village of Looe. Graham had a massive Chelsea bun and I had a bacon sandwich with about 6 rashers! Two cornish pastys into the bags and we're away.Across the Tamar via a very busy chain ferry into Plymouth, marks the beginning of a very long but stunning ascent onto Dartmoor, dramatic scenery in every direction. Once Princeton is reached the terrain lets up a little(!), and the ride is completed by a really fast and exhilarating descent into Moretonhampstead. 71 miles completed in really bright warm sunshine, made for a testing day. The day is spoilt by discovering I have lost my wallet! However I have managed to get rid of a shed load to Graham's niece, so my bike will be a lot lighter tomorrow.
2 toughest days over, a moderate 72 miles tomorrow! Yeahaa!SH
