After a few hours sleep, we woke up with very sore heads and still very tired...but we had to leave the Motorhome Park by 10am! We slowly packed up and then made our way 1km down the road to a car park, where we paid our fee then went back to sleep! After another few hours we were feeling a little better so ventured over the road to the supermarket and bought some food to feed our hangover hunger! We ate in the van then set off to Petone and our home for the night at the local rugby club.
As soon as we set foot inside the club we felt at home. The place was full of volunteers helping out during the world cup (all with name badges so we knew who to ask if we needed anything!). A lovely lady called Annie booked us in, gave us an information pack, and showed us around. We were given a space in the car park and were able to use the facilities, and we were even given honarary membership of the club so we could go in the bar! There were quite a few people around and they had a massive screen set up in the gym showing all the games, which were also shown on a big screen in the bar. We had planned to drive into Wellington again to watch the England match, but were so impressed with the club and felt so welcomed that we made ourselves at home in the bar where Fiji v Namibia was on the screen. Immediately we were joined by one of the volunteers introducing themselves, then another.... who introduced us to a few others including the club chairman...then the club captain came in with his wife and we got talking to them! This carried on for the rest of the day, and everyone was interested to hear about our trip and eager to hear how we liked NZ!
There were a few other campervans staying at the club - mostly Welsh as the Wales team are based in Wellington. We ate dinner at the club (braised steak and onions with potatoes and veg for $10!) and drank some cheap beer. We watched France v Japan (with a busload of Japanese people who arrived just after kick off) adn then it was time for the big game of the day - England v Argentina. We moved into the gym to watch it on the big screen. it didn't take us long to discover that watching the English rugby team play is just as stressful as watching the football team! We were losing up until the second half and ended up winning 13-9. It was the first time the team had played in their 'all-black' kit - what's all that about?? We went straight to bed after the match, still tired from our first NZ hangover!
