After a good night's sleep, we awoke to hear on the radio that the South African rugby team were due to be welcomed into Wellington at 10am. It was half 9, so we decided to down our cups of tea and head into town to see if we could see them!
After a half hour drive down the motorway and struggling to find somewhere to park, we were sent to the Te Papa museum car park by the guy at Wellington Motorhome park. This was after he'd told us that it would cost $75 to park there on Friday night and $125 for Saturday night - we said we'd think about it! We parked up and walked along to the water front, where the fan zone was still being built. Eventually, we found where the SA team were having their lunch and signing autographs. The crowd wasn't too big, so we managed to get some photos, although we didn't have a clue who any of them were! (Apart from the little man who had 'coach' written on his jacket!).
We then went to the I-Site and spoke to a really helpful guy who helped us to get lots of things sorted - we booked somewhere to camp at a local rugby club for Saturday night and our ferry to the South island for Sunday. We had our lunch at the Green Man pub using one of our discount vouchers - a very nice Mediterranean pizza and cajun fries!
In the afternoon, we walked to the New Zealand Parliament buildings (including the beehive - see photo) and went on a free tour, which was really interesting - we were shown into the debating chamber which is the equivalent of our House of Commons, and told all about the history of the place. Can't imagine being allowed into the Commons as easily!
After a coffee in Starbucks we headed back to Mary's and had our tea at Richard and Jacqui's house! A busy day in the capital!
