After a chilly night in the van, we woke up and ate our breakfast in the front of the van with the heating on! We set off South towards the small town of Moeraki and it's famous boulders - a lot more interesting than they sound!
We parked up and walked the short distance to the beach. On the beach were the boulders - huge, perfectly spherical rocks like giant marbles, that have formed there over thousands of years. The process is apparently like a pearl forming in an oyster from a grain of sand - over time, the limestone rocks have formed around objects like shells and smaller stones. Originally buried in the cliff, they have gradually been exposed due to erosion and rolled or fallen onto the beach. There was one further up the path away from the beach that is just starting to come through the ground. For us, they gave us the chance to take a few funny photos!
After the boulders, we drove along the Coastal Scenic Route back towards Oamaru, and stopped at a pic nic site near All Day Bay for lunch. We parked up in Oamaru to use the internet and managed to get a few things done. We drove back to the campsite in the late afternoon, very proud of ourselves after managing to spend NO money at all for the first time in NZ!
The campsite fee was supposed to be $6 each but there was noone there to collect it, so we got another night for free! We settled down for another chilly night in the bush - tomorrow we'll go back to civilisation and get some heating!
