After our second 'free' night in a row, we were ready for a powered site again and decided to head out of Dunedin towards a campsite on the Otago Peninsula. The peninsula is famous for it's stunning scenery, with views of Dunedin and the harbour along the hill road, and it's wildlife. The area is a sanctuary for yellow-eyed and blue penguins, as well as being one of the few places in the world where the huge Royal Albatross nest on land - they spend most of their time out at sea, and rarely come in to the shore in most places.
However, before the peninsula, our first stop was a pharmacy in the Wharehouse (NZ version of Matalan, we've decided!) to pick up some medicine for Laura, who had a sore throat and swollen glands - nice! Then we were off along a really scenic route, leaving Dunedin behind and heading along the windy hill road, with fantastic views. When we came down the other side, we realised that we could have driven along the bay and encountered far fewer bends and turns, but it was worth it anyway for the views - we can take the easy road on the way back!
At the campsite, we checked in and ate lunch before taking the 500m walk down the raod to Portobellow Village. There wasn't really much there - (a pub, a store, a cafe, the road leading to the aquarium and a swimming pool that was still closed for winter!) but it was all we needed!
We called in at the pub for a pint - no one in apart from a couple of old fellas sat at the bar, so we had a chat with the barman about how badly England had played against Argentina, and read the papers for free!
Back at the campsite, we spent the afternoon reading, while Laura dosed herself up, then in the evening we managed to see the first episode of X Facotr USA - Laura, in particular enjoyed her reality TV fix - I think her exact words were 'I"ve missed X Factor!'. Good to catch up on telly for the night, got a busy day of penguin watching ahead tomorrow!
