So we left Napier on the morning of 23 January. We still have to keep reminding ourselves that it is January. We enjoyed Napier, exploring the Art Deco streets and enjoying the sunshine and walks along the beach.
Our first stop was just a little south at Hastings, and then on to Palmerston North. Sun was very hot but we enjoyed walking around both towns. Hastings also had some Art Deco areas. Squeezed in a stop at Woodville at Yummy Mummy's. Amazing cheesecake!
After Palmerston we found Ohkea Air base. This was the RNZAF base where Mum and Dad met in August 1949. We had a photo from then of the entrance of the base so having driven all the way round we decided to go right up to the checkpoint and ask!, The security guard informed us that the entrance had been moved and the entrance in the photo was now enclosed in the base and the hut was a listed building. He very kindly let us on to the base and we have some photos of us at the same entrance as Dad's photo. Amazing to pick up this history.
We drove on to Wanganui. A special place for us as Dad was always going up the Wanganui whenever you asked where he was going.
Another fantastic lodge. A walk through town before tea. Photos on Facebook later and will attach Ohkea air base on next entry.
