Another part of our volunteering is to go into the refugee schools and help teach basic English, math, science etc. Most of the children are from Afghanistan where their parents have left the country and are taking refuge in Kuala Lumpur.
Well the first time I went in they said oh, one I the teachers isn't here today.. You'll be ok taking them today.. Soo the topic is friends.. Just get them to talk about friends..
So I ask is there a lesson plan?
No no you don't need one. Your English is fine...
Sure good English mean perfect improvising teacher.. For 3 hours me and Elias tried to drag out what makes a good friend and what makes a bad friend.. Funny thing is the students make me question my own English.. Friend is that ie or ei.. Thank god when had a pocket dictionary..! Although it was nice when one of the students thanked me for coming here and teaching them English!
The second time I went in the head asked us which topics we felt most comfortable teaching.. I said maths over English seeing as their grammars probably better than mine.. And the head said right what level have you done math to..
Urm a level..
Oh that's perfect, you can take the top class and teach them some math.. Your ok to teach them that.. The teacher for them hasn't shown up today.. Oh you don't need a text book.. Just teach them whatever you think they should know by now...
Walking over there I was thinking Jesus what am I doing..? I went and found a txt book to help prompt me on stuff I could teach them.. So I started with fractions, adding and subtracting fractions. Most of them were fine with it until one girl when I asked her to show me how to do it.. She didn't know how many times 2 went into 8.. She hadn't even been taught her times tables yet.. So whilst trying to teach the rest of the class how to work out fractions I had to keep sitting down with the girl and teach her her times tables..
