Kya Travels
This morning we got up and got ready. Darren and I were still feeling pretty ******, but got some paracetamol into us, and toughened up. We walked down by the Minster where the meeting spot for the York free walking tour was. We waited there for a bit for the tour to start, and when it did, our guide was pretty cool! He had this long hair and massive bushy beard, and he was wearing boardies! Not what you expect a tour guide to look like! But when he started talking, you could instantly tell that he knew his stuff! He had written history books and everything! He took us around the city, talking about the history of the place from as early as about 50BC! We saw the city walls and gates, and he took us into the museum gardens where there were relics of old roman graves that had been found in the area, as well as the original roman city walls, which were over a thousand years old! It was crazy how intact they still were, considering how old they were! It was really cool. We went through the gardens a bit more, past the old remains of a massive abbey that used to be there. Pretty much all that was left was the skeleton of one wall, but it looked pretty cool! The roman graves were placed in the gardens all around, and it looked really cool. After the gardens we went up onto the city walls where we walked the section of the wall that I had walked by myself the other day. It's my favourite section, I think! Very pretty. After that we stopped for a break, and the three of us went across the road to a pie shop for a quick bite to eat. They made authentic pies there, homemade, and the veggie one was pretty yummy! We met back up with the tour group, and moved more into the centre of the city, where we went for a walk along the road, Shambles, which I'd also been to the other day. But it was good to hear all the stories about it, and the history of the street and all that. We walked through the city and along past the Jorvik centre, where we heard a little bit about the history of Vikings in York, as well as the history of confectionary! (Did you know that smarties and kit kats both originated from York?) Then we moved on to another part of town, where there was the remains of the York castle, Clifford's Tower, and the old prisons, where we were given some more history, and stories about the residents of the prison, including the infamous d*** Turpin. At that point, the tour ended, so we tipped Alan and headed off to find somewhere to get a cold drink and sit down. Three hours of walking was quite a bit for a couple of sickies! We stopped at a place called the Blue Boar Inn, where we grabbed a drink and had a bit of a chat with the bartenders, who were up for a bit of a joke around. Then we started to make our way back to the hostel, but stopped at the fudge factory again, to watch some fudge being made! It was pretty cool, and the guy that was making it was really funny too. They boiled it up in a big copper pot, then when it was at the perfect temperature, they poured it out onto a big marble table to cool for a bit, before scraping and shaping it until it was the perfect consistency. Then the best part, the taste test! Pretty yummy! Lyle bought a slice, and we headed back to the hostel. Then it was nap time! Damn being sick really takes it out of you! After a couple of hours of snoozing, we woke up and went to go find some dinner. We headed towards an Indian place we had seen the other day, but must have taken a wrong turn, because we couldn't find it! So we wandered around to find something else, and ended up at a Nepalese restaurant called The Yak and Yeti. We went in there, and got some yummy Nepalese dumplings and curries. I didn't know dumplings were a Nepalese dish! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals there, and we left very satisfied. On the walk back, we stopped in at Tesco's for more paracetamol, then wandered back to the hostel and passed the Indian place we were looking for! Will have to do Indian tomorrow I think!! We got back to the hostel and hung out in our dorm chatting to the girls from last night and another guy, Daniel, from the US, who was really nice too. We talked for ages about all kinds of things, then eventually decided it was time for a shower and bed!
