Kya Travels
When we woke up today, we went out to the common room at about 10:30 and John (Scottish guitarist) was there again. And he'd already started on his bottle of whiskey!! Crazy! We were planning to do a walking tour that day, but didn't get up in time, cos I wanted to let Darren sleep to try get over whatever bug was trying to get him. So instead we had a cuppa, got ready for the day, then went for a walk to find some lunch. We walked up the street to a place called Russell's of Coppergate that did roasts. Finally! Our traditional English roast! I was pretty excited to see nut loaf on the menu, so I ordered that, and the boys got some meat and veg from the carvery. When mine came out, I got to go up and fill my plate with veggies from the carvery too! My body was all like "mmmmm veggies!! Thank you!" It was sooo delicious!! But they served it with like a berry coulis which was weird... I think it would have been better with just gravy... After lunch we headed back to the hostel to try book some accommodation for the weekend. I'd only booked two nights at this place so we could leave our plans open, but we'd decided we would stay in York for the week, cos it was really cool, and there seemed to be a lot to see and do. Unfortunately the awesome hostel we were in was fully booked for the weekend. We managed to book in for the weekdays next week though! So we got back to the hostel and used their computer to look up the accommodation. We were struggling to find anything, and the owners came by to help us for a bit, but in the end we had no luck, so we thought we'd head down to the information centre to get some help. As soon as I walked out the door though, I realised I'd left my jacket (with the camera in the pocket!) in the restaurant at lunch! Oops! So we had a bit of a power walk down there, where thankfully they had it for me at the counter! Then we headed back in the other direction to the info centre. The lady there had a bit of a search for us, and also struggled to find anything... So we had to splash out a bit and book a B&B that was a bit out of our budget... And out of the city centre too! Unfortunate, but at least we'll have a roof over our heads! We headed back to the hostel, and hung out in the common room a bit longer. John was still there drinking and playing, and then he left his guitar with us while he went down to the pub. So that was pretty cool to get some steel-string guitar time! Darren worked on a couple of songs he'd had ideas for, and I (kind of) helped with a song about stealing the guitar while the guy went to the bar. It was supposed to be funny, but turned out pretty cool... Then I worked a little on an annoying song I've been working on that I haven't been able to nail yet, and wrote the guitar part for a possible newby. While we were playing, and having a cuppa (with FREE bickies!) Lyle went off for a walk. We waited for him to come back before we went out for dinner, but he wasn't hungry, so Darren and I went out to find some food. We walked around the streets for a bit, and ended up back pretty much next door to the hostel at the first place we looked at, called Bobo Lobo, which is apparently more of a cocktail bar, but the girl there was super nice, and they had our new favourite meal on the menu... Chimichangas! So we got some DELICIOUS garlic bread, and some chimichangas which were awesome, but totally different to the ones we'd tried before. Yummy. After dinner we went for a big walk around the town, down streets we hadn't been before, and went past a massive church, over a river, and down the bank on the other side. We walked past some geese with their goslings (maybe the ones from yesterday?), and back over the river further down. As we headed back into town we came across a massive double decker bus, that was being used for a TGIFridays promotion. They were giving away free cocktails, with no catch except to try get you to tag in on Facebook! So we lined up for about 10-15 minutes, while the promoters showed us magic tricks (I even got a souvenir card from a trick I have no idea how he did...) and we chatted and joked around with the group of women in front of us. When it was our turn to get on the bus, we went up to the top level, where one of the promoters, Kelly showed us up, got us to do the Facebook thing, and we got a shot from the bar guy called a Lemon Meringue. It was yummy! We got a photo with Kelly in the booth, then went to the bottom level for another cocktail. I can't remember the name of it, but it had raspberries! Then our turn was over, and we headed out of the bus, said goodbye and headed back to the hostel where we chilled out in the dorm, listening to music and trying to get an early night. The music from the pub downstairs was ridiculously loud though, so we eventually ended up getting up again to watch some TV in the common room. We had a cuppa and had a chat to a couple of Aussies who were telling us about Spain, then eventually went back to bed (even though it was still crazy noisy!).
