Kya Travels
We woke up very early this morning, with nowhere near enough sleep, then went downstairs for breakfast. We got a buffet meal, with everything you could ask for for breakfast (except potato bread!) then we headed back upstairs where Darren had a shower and a shave while I had a snooze. When we were ready, we left and walked down the street to the Mexican restaurant, Viva Mexico, where we went in to meet up with Nikki, who was the girl from Geelong that we had met on the tour in Ireland back in June, who was in Edinburgh for Hogmanay as well, with a bunch of friends. We had a chat and a laugh with everyone for a bit, then ordered our delicious chimichangas! After everyone ordered, we talked up the chimichangas and half the table changed their orders to get one as well! Hilarious. So we ate and chatted and laughed with Nikki and her friends over lunch, and probably scared off half the restaurant with our rowdiness!! When we'd finished, we followed the local of our group to a bar down the road called the Brass Monkey. Darren and I ordered a Christmas ale each then went into the other room, which was full of bed type couches which were amazingly comfortable, and all had a drink and more chats together. The conversation turned to Nikki and her massage therapy, and she started giving treatments to people as she explained what she did! It was funny, because as soon as the conversation started, everyone suddenly had a problem and needed work! After a while there, they all left to head back to get ready for their tour group that was doing something that night. We were thinking about staying, a the bar set up a screen and put on a movie every day in the couch room at three, and it was almost three, but then we decided just to head back to the hotel and watch a movie in bed instead. So we went back and put on the TV, and I had a snooze and Darren played some guitar, and I caught up on a bit more blogging, then after a while we both woke up and got ready to head out again. There were some fireworks that were going off that we could see from our window, then when we got out on the street another set went off as well. We walked up the street and crossed the bridge to where the torchlight procession was taking place. A traditional part of the Hogmanay celebrations, every year on the 30th, the streets are filled with masses of people making the trek along the streets carrying torches up to a hill on the other end of town. So we got a spot at the side of the road that the procession was going down and watched them all pass for a while and getting some pictures, before heading back into town and heading to a pub called the Three Sisters, where we were going to meet Kay, our tour guide from last time we were in Edinburgh. When we got there though, there was no sign of her, so we left again after a bit to grab some cash, then went back to the pub and tried to contact Kay. After a while we eventually got on to her, and discovered she'd sent a message that she would meet us somewhere else, but had sent it to the wrong person! Oops! So we got a drink and sat down while we waited for her to text us the details of where to meet, when all of a sudden, she showed up! We gave her a hug and got introduced to her friends, Amy and Laura, then as we were chatting, Nikki showed up as well! So there were hugs all round then Nikki hung with us for five minutes before heading back outside to hang with her crew. So we stayed inside and chatted with Kay and her friends while we finished our drinks, then we said bye to Nikki and headed out and walked up the road a while. We got to a place called Ghillie Dhu, where Haggis were putting on a Keilidh (traditional Scottish dancing) for their tour groups, and Kay had gotten us free tickets, so we went in there, We went to the bar with Amy and Laura and got a drink while Kay went to meet people and do the tour guide thing. We had an extremely quick conversation about the Scottish Independence vote, just to find out what the girls thought about it while Kay wasn't there. Laura was quite adamantly against it (whereas Kay is quite adamantly for it) and Amy was against it, but not strongly. We found a spot between a few tables where we could stand out of the way and have a chat while Kay did her thing. We had a good chat with the two girls while watching the mess that was a dance floor full of mostly Aussies trying to do the Scottish dancing, which was quite entertaining! We chatted to a couple of Aussies on the table next to us, a brother and sister, Dylan and Sam, and after a while we decided we'd all get up together for the next dance! We got up and joined a group and tried to work out what we were doing! It was crazy but heaps of fun! Pretty much whenever we had no idea what was going on, we'd just link arms and spin around for a while! It was fun. After a couple of dances, they announced the last dance, so we stayed up for that, and had a pretty good rhythm going for it, before going back to the table to finish our drinks and chat a bit more, then we decided we would head home. We had no idea where Kay, Laura or Any were, so we just headed off and started walking home. We walked past a pretty park with great views across to the castle, then stopped by KFC for a snack. We got asked directions to a gay club by a young girl and guy then spent a bit of time chatting to them before we headed back to the hotel and went to bed.
