This morning, we took a trip on the Jacobite Train from Fort William to Mallaig, a small fishing village on the western coast. The Jacobite is a famous steam train, made more so because of its alternate persona, the Hogwart's Express. We travelled through some majestic scenery and passed over the Glenfinnan Viaduct which is also famous for its engineering significance as well as for its extreme beauty.
Mallaig is pretty little town which benefits greatly from the influx of train passengers each day. We spent about 2 hours there, and had some very nice fish and chips for lunch before wandering down to the harbour and through some of the shops.
When we arrived back at Fort William after the return journey, we hopped in the car and drove back to the Glenfinnan Viaduct for a closer look. It looked very impressive from the ground, much taller than we realised. It was built in 1897 and was a pioneering work in mass concrete.
On the way back into Fort William, we parked the car for a closer look at the locks on the Caledonian Canal. We were fortunate that there was a large square rigged ship, the Flying Dutchman passing through the last lock, so we stood and watched the whole process. The Caledonian Canal is a passage which cuts completely through Scotland from Inverness to fort William and consists of a series of natural Lochs joined up with manmade canals.
Finally, back in town, we had a walk along the main street of Fort William and through the remains of the Old Fort.
