This morning, we started off heading for Inverness but stumbled across the Culloden Moor Battlefield on the way. This was the site of a famous battle in 1746 between the Jacobites and the Hanoverians. There was a big visitor centre with interactive displays etc but we chose not to pay for entry. However, it was free to walk through the battlefield itself which was quite interesting.
Next we drove down along the shores of Loch Ness to Drumnadrochit where we had some lunch at a small cafe and then went for a cruise on a nice flybridge cruiser called Nessie Hunter. Our skipper was a fellow called George Edwards, who is apparently a bit of a local identity, and he gave a very informative commentary in a voice that sounded just like Sean Connery.
Afterwards we continued on south, past the bottom of Loch Ness, along the Caledonian Canal.
There were several delays while bridges across the canal were opened to allow boats to pass. Not far from our final destination, we made a stop at the foot of a mountain called Aonach Mor which is part of the Nevis Range. We went for a long ride up the mountain on a cable car called the Mountain Gondola. In winter, this is a good skiing location and there were still some small patches of snow visible. We had coffee and muffins at the top while we took in the magnificent view and then continued on to our accommodation at Fort William which is near the foot of Ben Nevis.
