Everyone got up this morning for a nice 7km run! We drove to Albert Park - home of the Australian Grand Prix for the run. We walked into Aquatic center also for a look, really cool area with lots of swimming/diving areas, basketball and table tennis facilities.
We ran back to apartment for some breakfast before beginning the 2.5 hour journey to Philip Island. It was quite a horrible day, the rain spilled on us as we were driving down and when we got onto the Island, although the rain was stopped, the wind was quite strong. To top it all off, we had to sit on a beach for 1 hour later in the cold wind! We did come armed though with a few layers of clothes each and 2 blankets!
Before heading down the center where the Penguin would be, we had a bite to eat at Nobbies center. As the time went on, it was evident that bus loads of people were arriving fast and furiously.
We arrived at the center and took our seat on the stand at the beach, we were in 2nd row, so quite decent seats. They came up at 17:57 that night and were really cool - they were tiny little things and there were hundreds of them. Apparently they have some lad counting them every night, i didnt hear how many appeared on our night but the night before, there were 1400+ of the little guys. I know what your thinking, how cool a job as that guy got counting for a living...
To be honest, i think its quite cheeky that they charge people 20 quid to sit on a public beach but i guess that got to get cash from somewhere to preserve the areas which the penguins use.
They jumped out of water, took their time hanging around the beach, which was a bit frightening as there were a couple of, what looked like eagles flying above looking for some dinner. We got the chance to get really close to them while walking back up also which was cool.
We started our drive back to Melbourne and got some takeaway. I got Barramundi and Chips while the others got all sorts of noodle stuff.
Had a great day today, was definitly worth the trip down and waiting on the beach.
