Kate's Chronicles
Was exhausted after 16 classes last week so heavens knows how I will be after a marathon 22 classes this week. I have all the Senior 1 classes this week. Had the first 4 this morning, we are now taking our siesta and then I have another 2 this afternoon. Working on china time....don't have my schedule for the rest of this week yet.
Will be getting my China mobile number sorted out tonight. Crazy system here - you get your sim card for the province you are living in otherwise calls cost a fortune. I have my landline number which is (china prefix) 0776 2885366 just in case anyone needs me urgently or has the urge to spend money on international calls!!!
I had a quiet weekend but the students here have school on Saturdays and half of Sunday so they only get a few free hours on Sunday afternoon to visit their families or go into the city. Sunday I FINALLY found the back gate of the school (its only taken me all week) to find we have fruit and veg stalls, the bus stop for the city and a few shops that sell basics including alcohol....now I am really set up!!
Sunday lunch a student invited me to go to the local food stalls and I had freshly made steamed wontons in a delicious soup. Best meal since I've been in Baise. The stall owners were very excited and have told me I have to go back and eat there again. At 2 kwai (about 30 cents) I most certainly will be partaking in their food.
Then Sunday evening one of my students knocked on my apartment door to present me with some freshly cooked chicken and vegetables from her mother. I was very honoured as she sent 2 drumsticks - which will aren't my favourite part of the chicken but they are considered the best bit here along with the feet...yuk!!
Was presented with a chinese fan by one of my students (photo attached). It is really beautiful and the whole class cheered when I accepted the gift. The students are fantastic- I've never known a school where the class cheer when the teacher enters but they are all so excited to have a foreign teacher. I hope the novelty doesn't wear off.
Thanks Jo for sending me the TKD results, it was great to hear some news from home and congratulations to everyone who did so well, particularly Lauren and James.....off to the world's again??? Where are they being held this year?
Thats all for now.....off for my sieta.
love to all, Kate xxx

wayne this is so great Kate..........what lovely pics actually my students cheer when I enter the class room as well followed by uncontrolled laughter.....what is the time difference between here and there?
Lauren Sounds like you're having a ball, I'm getting itchy feet! Thanks for the mention! The World's are in Wellington in March 2011. I believe Gabi is selected too!
mary m Hi groove - really enjoying your travel stories! Also so pleased to hear you arrived safely - the silence was a little worrying. Got to love the squat loos - after all my travelling in Asia its the ONE thing I still cant conquer! Stay safe ( particularly from muggings) and look forward to the next installment! xxx
Kate Hi Mary, great to hear from you. Yes the squat toilets are a quaint custom aren't they. I say to people just think of the exercise you are getting for your bum and thighs!!!
Ray Great to see how your days are going Kate. They certainly work you harder in Chna than here in Tas. The 2 or so hours "siesta" time in China is beneficial and should be introduced here, as it at least gives you time to re-charge and not switch off around 3pm. I've always been impessed with the friendships you achieve in China, especially with those who are so starved in wanting to know about the "outside world". Keep safe and enjoy the experience. It's something I wished I'd done years ago, LOL Ray.
