It was a long drive to Moeraki from Mount Cook. After reloading our food and fuel at Twizel, we headed outland to a really fascinating place called the "Clay Cliffs". Mount Cook started off wet and cloudy, and the views around Lake Pukaki on the way weren't at their best. Fortunately for us we were coming back this way after Mount Cook... and this time the weather was gorgeous! It seems that everywhere we have been so far in NZ has been stunning and Lake Tekapo did not disappoint. The blue turquoise glacial lake was incredible. The lake was completely surrounded by mountains; including along one side NZ's impressive Southern Alps. Our Rangitata rafting trip was out of this world fun, fun, fun!!! We arrived at the rafting base river lodge, situated on one of NZ's finest high country sheep stations at the foot of the Southern Alps. It was a lovely little lodge with a log fire. We had been really excited as it was one of the main rafting rivers that could guarantee grade 5 rapids, plus the Rangitata gorge was absolutely gorgeous. We took scenic route 72 across the Canterbury planes to get to Methven, travelling over the Hawkins River... which was more likea steam, Chris wasn't impressed haha. For lunch we found a beautiful pebble beach, on Rakaia River close to the gorge - it had the bluest turquoise water.
