It was a long drive to Moeraki from Mount Cook. After reloading our food and fuel at Twizel, we headed outland to a really fascinating place called the "Clay Cliffs". We were really glad that we had been recommended this place as was a quick drop off and broke up the long journey. The cliffs were quite strange, right in the middle of some private land; these huge jagged edged clay formations had many crags, cracks and passages between them. Looking up close at the cliffs was pretty amazing, and the sunlight that shone in between them looked awesome. Chris tried to get a better look by climbing up through a steep and narrow passage, and I followed shortly behind. Not knowing how steep it was, I got nearly where Chris was (Struggling in flipflops!!) and looked behind me - so so steep!! I panicked, legs trembling... shoted Chris, so he came back and with him along came aload of sand and rubble. He helped me back down, but I still fell flat on my arse! What did he do…? Stand and laugh!
Back on the road, we headed to see some Maori Rock drawings, but we will say no more about that... as they were terrible - looked like a 5 year olds crayon drawing!
We quickly moved on to the East Coast to Omaru where you can see Blue and the rare Yellow Eyed Penguins. However it seemed pointless to pay for a tour of the penguin colony as further down the coast we knew there was free viewings and hides along other hidden beaches. Therefore we gave it a miss.
Further down the coast we arrived at the Moeraki Boulders, the mysterious perfectly round boulders on the coast line. As it was nearly dark we camped up there for the night, We woke up early the next morning as the sun was rising, and got straight down to the beach - with perfect blue sky's. The Boulders looked awesome with the sunlight reflecting off them and the water. It was so strange how perfectly round they were. Some believe it is a natural cause of erosion, unbelievable to us as they were so perfectly round - however other scientists believe that they were already like this, and that erosion of the rear cliffs has simply exposed them and that there are many more in the cliffs to come, making a lot more sense to us. Nevertheless it's one of life's great mysteries, and really got us thinking! An amazing start to a beautiful day. Shortly down the coast, we drove down an unsealed road to a lighthouse that a girl had recommended to us at the Boulders. Here you can see Seals, Sea Lions and Penguins. We were out at the Lighthouse all by ourselves and got so many great pics and videos of the seals and sea lions. Unfortunately it was early afternoon, so the penguins weren't around, as they feed during the day and come ashore at night to feed their young. Nevertheless we still had plenty more chances to see them down the coast. xxx
