When we arrived in kaikoura the weather was shocking, all whale watching trips had been cancelled for the day as they rely on planes etc to spot the whales for the boats and it was to cloudy to spot any, plus the sea was too rough. We went to the whale watching centre and I asked the woman what the weather was like for the next day but it didn't look promising and she didn't give us much hope in the way she cam across. As we only had 2.5 weeks left to do the North Island we decided to give it a miss, but hopefully we will be able to check them out in South America instead. It was a real shame considering we had drove 150km to get here only to turn around but it was nice to check out Kaikoura village to settle our curiosity of the place. Central kaikoura was really nice, centred mainly around the whole sea life watching and was very small, so after visiting the 'Why Not' Cafe for a good feed, sorting out some emails and then booking our ferry that night to get to the North island we headed off back up to Picton where the ferry terminal is situated. We felt the need to visit the 'Why not' cafe as this is the name Kate has been given (Why Not Kate), as whenever Paula, James or I suggested to do something when we were together in Aussie, Kate would always be up for it. It was the same when we played poker she would always bet and say 'why not', it amused us with her cheeky little looks!! Alot like Wilba in that sense who originally got this knickname for his Poker game. On the coastal drive back up to Picton it was raining as hard and there were loads of seals playing along the beach and in the water, there everywhere over here haha.Anyway we arrived in Picton around 3.30pm and our boat wasnt until 6pm so we did some shopping, filled the tanks, took showers and got ourselves sorted to hit the North Island hard.
