Turangi is just at the southern tip of lake Taupo and the reason for coming here was to complete the Alpine Tongariro Crosssing walk, one of NZ best 1 day walks. It takes you up into many old volcanic craters and to the summit of Tonagriro, with stunning views of the surrounding park. The afternoon we got here the weather was absolutely lovely but after a trip to the visitors centre it was clear that the weather was going to be coming in thick. We camped up that night at the local motor camp, fingers crossed that it would be ok to do the walk the next day but we woke up and as predicted the cloud was low and it was beginning to rain hard, absolutely gutted. As this was one of the main things we wanted to do in the North Island we thought we would wait one more day and see if the weather improved but it didn't and according to the visitors centre it was going to be like this all week up until the end of the weekend. It was annoying that we had wasted a day here but it was raining all over the North Island and we managed to get alot of our journal done. We had the campsite all to ourselves as usual, which was great and had a TV Lounge with sky movies so we just chilled all day, took a trip into town for some fish and chips and finished the night of with watching the mothers day special Mama Mia, haha!!! We are going to move on tomorrow up to the Waitomo Caves as you can go caving in bad weather, in fact they say its even more fun to do it in these conditions. We are going to try our hardest to come back down later on and do the crossing but for now the weather is to bad and its snowing most day at high level, which on this walk is apparently very dangerous, but we'll have to see!! West of here is the volcano Mt Egmont also, which we will hopefully get a chance to at least se if we come back down.
