Today we headed up to the main township of Tauranga to the Bay of Plenty. It was an absolutely perfect day so we wanted to make the most of it. We got some info from the local visitors centre as we wanted to do a walk that gave use 360 degree panoramic views of the Bay of Plenty and the surrounding harbour etc. We were told that climbing Mt Maunganui was what we were looking for right next to the main beach along the marine parade. It wasn't a huge mountain, it was more like a a large craggy hill, taking about 40 mins to climb depending which route you took but the 360 degree views up here were just spectacular and it was a really nice walk leisurely walk for a change haha!! It was a great place to just totally relax, watching the locals on the beach, where you can actually pick your own green mussels and shell fish. As we werent spending long here it gave us exactly what we were hoping for to settle our curiosity of what it was like here. You could see Moturiki island in the distance, Matakana island, the port, and the whole stretch of coastline, the Bay of Plenty. Once we had climbed down we took a little walk on the beach and then had lunch on the marine parade overlooking the beach, perfect!! It was after this we decided to make our way to the Corromandel penninsular to make the most of this beautiful day. We would have loved to have driven a little further to Whakatane where they do excursions to White Island, an active volcano of the coast, where you have to wear gas masks due to the fumes but we have done so much money is getting thin. You can also dive around the volcano but we will have to save that for another time.
