Happiness Is The Road
It had been an awful night and neither of us had got much sleep. We couldn’t wait to get out of ‘The Isa’. We decided to have breakfast somewhere else so left as soon as we could. The weather was a lot better today. The sun was out and ‘The Isa’ did look marginally less awful today. We drove past the huge mine that dominated the place and out of town. We were very relieved to see ‘The Isa’ fall away into the distance along with the cowboys and the ’beauty disadvantaged’! I kept checking the rear view but the road away was very quiet and we weren’t being followed! We stopped at a rest area about 50 kilometres, a safe enough distance, and had our brekky to the sound of road trains powering through. We had originally intended to drive further today and head across the border into the Northern Territory but as we were so tired we decided instead to only go as far as Camooweal, the last town in Queensland, which about another 100 kilometres or so away. The soil here was very red and an endless expanse of bush and shrub land disappeared off into the distance in all directions. We were very much in the red centre now. We saw one crazy emu on the way darting about at the side of the road. There were two caravan parks at Camooweal and we chose the one that was behind the Post Office Hotel. It had good reviews on Trip Advisor. I checked in at the bar and then we found our site. We chose the spot at the farthest end of the site overlooking the road. It was only about 1pm now and we just relaxed for the rest of the day. We had a great view of the road and all the road trains and this place was so quiet after the horrors of ’The Isa’. The sunset here later on was magnificent. The sky went a brilliant red as we watched the sun set behind the petrol station. We were happy to be going across the border tomorrow.
