Happiness Is The Road
It was red hot when we left Karumba. We had to follow the road back to Normanton first and then we hit the highway south in the direction of Cloncurry which was nearly 500 kilometres away. Cloncurry is where we join the main highway across to the Northern Territory and the red centre. Our intention was to get about half way to Cloncurry and stop the night at the Burke & Wills Roadhouse. After Normanton some of the road was single file again and we kept a good eye out for the massive road trains that came thundering through. We saw thousands of termite mounds on this stretch of road going off into the distance as far as the horizon in both directions. It was an incredible sight. We stopped briefly at a rest area and then hit the highway again. There was loads of road kill along the side of the road and at one point we saw a huge wedge tailed eagle sat upon a dead kangaroo. It was a gigantic bird and amazing to see. At around two we pulled into the Burke & Wills Roadhouse. It was a really cute and rustic place and we got a site in the van park at the side. It was a great place and we just chilled for the rest of the day watching all the road trains passing through. We enjoyed another great sunset here with the sky putting on another fantastic show for us. It wasn't as hot at night here as in Normanton and Karumba and we went to sleep without having to put the fan on. We have some huge drives ahead of us now.
