We arose to the pitter patter of raindrops on the car roof and dashed to the bathroom to get ready. After breakfast and sorting our bits out we headed to the river and parked up to have a walk to the centre of New Zealand. We walked for around half an hour along the river then looked at the map and realised we had missed our turning so headed back a bit then over a bridge. After walking round some streets for a bit we found a sign pointing up a big hill saying 20 minutes walk to the centre of New Zealand. We headed on our way and after 20 minutes of puffing and panting came to another sign, we were excited to be there at last……..but when we looked down at the sign there was an arrow pointing further up the hill saying 15 minutes walk away. We dragged ourselves onwards and after another 5 minutes walking got to a T-junction with no sign. Since one direction had a fallen over sign saying 'Danger' we decided to go the other way. Another 5 minutes later we finally got to another sign…… no not the centre, a sign saying we had another 15 minutes to walk. Now we thought they really were taking the mick, we already had that sign 10 minutes walk ago. We pushed on further then thankfully after 15 minutes came to a big spiky pole, and a sign saying CENTRE OF NEW ZEALAND, yay. We collapsed on the chair for a bit then took some photo's and realising that our time in the car park had nearly run out we quickly headed back to the car.
When we got back to the car we had our sandwiches by the river before driving to the other side of town and parking back up. We then had a walk through the town towards the cathedral. We reached the cathedral, which for some strange reason they had decided to build on top of another hill, so after climbing up lots of steps we went in for a look and a sit down rest. On the way back to the car we popped into a jewellery shop, which were the ones who made 'The one Ring' (from the Lord of the Rings Film). It turns out that there were actually over 40 of 'The one Ring' made for the film. After looking at some replica's we headed back to the car.
We drove on towards Kaikoura, driving through the winery district and down the east coast. We had a quick stop at a walkway by the sea as you could see loads of seals playing around, and there were even some baby ones. We arrived in Kaikoura around 7ish and checked into a campsite and cooked some grub.
