The alarm went off and it was still dark so we flipped the laptop open and lay in bed while skyping family. In-between calls we both got ready and Rachel made a egg sandwich. On the way back from the kitchen with the egg sandwich the wind blew the top layer bread off, so she had to rush back to the kitchen to grab some more, but the ducks outside the car were very happy. After checking out we parked up in town and had a short walk along the river then through the town before we got back on the road.
We followed the coastal road north stopping at a few spots with fantastic views before we arrived at a place called Punakaiki. We parked up and had a walk around the coast area there seeing some cool pancake rock formations and a blow hole, pretty impressive to hear the rumbling of the sea in the rocks under us. Afterwards we popped into a crafts place and treated ourselves to a very tasty New Zealand ice cream. We then got back on the road towards Nelson stopping off at a few towns on the way.
We arrived at Nelson fairly late so popped straight into a supermarket to top up our food supply then found the nearest campsite. We made Mexican mince nachos for dinner, mmmmmm meat at last, then got chatting for the rest of the evening to a Canadian couple who had been travelling the north island and had just arrived south.
