We entered mexico last Monday without too much hassle. We have had to travel quite a long distance from the border at Chetumal as we have driven around the edge of Guatemala. To begin with the scenery was flat and quite uninteresting. It wasn't until we got to San Cristobal de las Casas and we were in the mountains that it improved. However the downside was the temperature which dropped mightily and we even had frost one night. Since then we have pushed on and visited a huge canyon with Walls 1000 metres deep. We did this in an enjoyable 2 hour fast boat trip up the canyon and we even saw huge crocodiles on the banks of the river. Then we visited the largest tree in the world which was fascinating. It measures 42 metres around the base and is about 40 metres high. It is 2000 years old and is in front of a church in a little town called El Tule. Today we have driven another 300 kms through the mountains . The road was ok and we saw vast numbers of cactus which are in flower and in lots of colours. It is amazing the trees which live in the dry climate and without any leaves have beautiful coloured flowers.
Tomorrow we continue to Toluca which is south of Mexico city and we hope to visit a place where thousands of butterflies come to visit and apparently all visit the trees there.
Internet has been difficult to find and use, sorry for the delay !!!!!!!
Mexico has been trouble free so far and we have only been searched once by the army!!!!! They were looking for guns apparently and they looked in all the cupboards!!!
We will continue to drive north in the next few days and head for the US border.
