A good nights sleep was had from dreaming about the turtles we saw last night... Four no less! (Or even five??)
This made for reasonably awkward breakfast chat with our latest air bnb host, Bettie. Probably the most 'hands on' host we've had so far, she made us a breakfast spread of fruit, toast, tea etc. Encouraging us to review her on Facebook, as well as air bnb, as well as her physical guest book... And showing us all her photos from her own visit to the UK a month ago. All in all, we certainly didn't make a quick exit!
From her house we drove over to Bundaberg Rum Distillery for a tour of the factory. This was to be a 'fun' tour, where we were coalesced into shouting 'HUZZAH' at 'good' things, and 'POPPYCOCK' to 'not so good' things. It kept energy up in the group, but honestly it wasn't really our thing. We fancied a bit more history about the place. Anyway, as no electronic devices were allowed on the tour (because of the fumes), no photos unfortunately.
Then onwards to Indulge, a local coffee and eatery where we wanted to plan... But no wifi! So no planning... But very tasty foods, if not slightly too large portions.
A quick search around Bunderberg to find wifi ended in failure as we ultimately ended up in a local 'hotel' ( = pub ). Not so enthused by the daytime drinkers, we decided to skip own ASAP and drive down to Hervey Bay, our next air bnb stop.
Driving onward to, we stopped off briefly at Childers, in between Bundaberg and Hervey Bay. Entirely fortuitously, we parked right outside what we wanted to see, a local art gallery and memorial. The art gallery has an exhibition of famous people's portraits made out of Aussie postage stamps. There was even one of Adolf Hitler (a strong choice, which also used some 3rd Reich stamps).
But it was the memorial we wanted to see. In 2000, the building this gallery was in, the Palace Backpackers Hotel, burnt down. 15 backpackers were killed, which was quite a shock for a town of 30,000. In response they rebuilt the building, and creates an art piece using the most recent photos of the backpackers. It was really nice.
Moving on, we arrived in Hervey Bay early, so we went to do a little shopping, then checked ourselves into the latest air bnb. There was no air conditioning. We melted. Suddenly it's humid again near the coast... Joy! 78% & 28 degrees at 18.30. You sure you really want to swap the UK for this??
When Mark our bnb host arrived, we had given up. We needed to find air con fast. Also, we needed to find wifi in order to plan (this place has no wifi on offer....) and the chosen place was... McDonalds! *groan*
After spending 3 or so hours in McDonalds (no hamburgers were consumed... Just poor coffee), we drove around town, finally stopping by the sea front. There we saw the Beach House hotel, and popped in for a cheeky drink.. As it was Friday after all.
Having watched a little of The Living Daylights with Mr Dalton (was on the telly), we went home and got into our most budget of air bnb beds. (Not sure a mattress counts as a bed)
At least it was now much cooler!
