I arrived in Bowen today and have managed to get a job starting next Friday. We will be packing tomatoes for up to 12hrs depending on the number of tomatoes that have been picked. When the factory is in full swing it runs 24hrs a day so we will be rotating between day and night shifts! Sounds like it will be hard and hot work, with lots of lovely bugs, but at least it won't be out in the very hot sun! Hopefully if we get the hours we can earn $1000 a week and it's for 6 weeks so I might leave Australia with the same amount of money I came with!
In the mean time we are making the most of the last of our free time for a while! There are lots of beautiful beaches and walks, and you can snorkel too, so plenty to do.
At the moment we are staying in a different hostel to the 1 we will be staying in when we work. This hostel seems ok, so hopefully the other one will be too. We haven't heard great things about working hostels, so pleasantly surprised and It's nice to properly unpack for once!

Nan and Gdad Good to hear that you have found a job and hope you won't find it too hard, hot or boring! Just think of the money and the fact that it's 'only' for 6 weeks. Also hope that the work hostel will be OK. Is it the same one that Tilly Smith was at ?. We are having an Indian summer at the moment with lovely warm sunshine. Love Nan,Gdad xx
Emma I ended up having my first shift last night. They broke me in gently with a nice 13hr shift squeezing tomatoes! There are 3 sections, rubbish, grading and packing. I was on rubbish so had to throw out ripe or diseased tomatoes, very tedious! We get a 10min break every 3hrs and 30mins after 6hrs, so it's a lot of standing up, but hopefully after a few shifts the feet and neck will get used to it. Iv got another 12hr shift tonight which I am not looking forward too as iv only just got up and showered, but I will no doubt be moaning about not getting enough hrs soon as it can be very variable, especially as I am working until the end of the season when things will slow down. I'm not in the same hostel as Tilly because they didn't have work. I'm not in the hostel I will be staying in for the 6wks yet either so still don't know what it's like.
Nan & Gdad Many thanks for your postcard from Brisbane. It was good to hear from you. Hope all is still going well with the tomatoes!also that you are getting used to the standing and bending. We visited the farm last week and met the new horse who is lovely and hopefully meets expectations. It was good to see all the animals - and your Mum, Dad, Kim and David! Weather here getting colder but still lots of sunshine.
