Adventures of a Global Wanderer
A friend was getting married at the Seoul Mosque this weekend so I had to make a special trip up from Daegu as I dont goto Seoul that often. The mosque is one of the first places I visited when I first visited Seoul on my arrival in Korea but I havent been back in a long time. During this trip I was surprised to see how touristy it has become with the locals. In the Itaewon Arab neighbourhood you will find the mosque if you follow the main street with all the Indian restaurants. Outside many people were gathered admiring the architecture and taking photos. As you enter thru the main gateway it will bring you to a much larger complex with a grand staircase leading up to the mosque Outside the mosque was a Korean Muslim watching the entrance. Usually non-muslims are allowed to enter mosques during non prayer times. However, because its becoming quite touristy and it was almost prayer time he wasnt letting people in, although he was providing detailed explanations in hangul to the visitors Inside there is detailed tilework stretching all around the walls. The front mihrab (prayer alcove pointing to Mecca) is also richly decorated in ceramic tiles and quranic calligraphy. The Imam (priest) for the prayers was also a Korean convert, as were some of the congregation. Outside it was quite touristy as many couples and visitors were posing and taking photos by the entrance. I dont remember this from previous visits, though I would have gone at crowed friday prayer times. The approach road leading in from the main Itaewon shopping street is lined with many muslim businesses and restaurants. There are also turkish bakeries, travel agents, and arab clothing stores.
