Adventures of a Global Wanderer
After our tiring day of biking I was looking forward to spending another night in a sauna and using the scrubbing cloths to give me a good clean down. Happy Day Sauna is conveniently located in the Hongdae district of Seoul and economically priced at 10,000w ($9). However, this probably isnt my most favourite sauna and I'd skip on this if I were in seoul again. This is the first time I had been in an underground sauna. The reception is below ground and the complex stretches for two more floors underground. Like all saunas, you pay, are given robes, and leave your shoes in the shoes locker. There were strange english instructions at the reception. You are given a wristband with the key which opens your shoe locker and main locker. This time they had an electronic bracelet which opens the locker doors. First I took a tour of the place before heading back for my long shower and scrub. It was three underground floors and not as elaborate with different saunas as other places had been. There was a seperate sleeping room for men and women. After my shower I tried to enter the darkened mens room which was still quite empty. I only managed to last about three minutes as they had hot air blowing in there and the place was like an oven. I had a water bottle in my locker as they dont allow food from outside in the premises, and I'd have to go back and get my bottle which I wasnt keen on or I'd lose my spot. Since the mens room was so hot I went to the common area outside to find a spot. I managed to get a corner and my friend suggested taking two mats. I tried putting a towel over my head for more darkness and getting some sleep. This floor turned out to be quite noisy. As it was dual sex and in a busy nightlife area people kept coming throughout the night. I'm not sure what they were doing, there seemed to be a party going on, lots of loud talking, laughing, and not letting me sleep. It didnt quieten down till about 3am. But then I was awoken by the attendant coming round collecting extra mats. I had two and he woke me to move the top mat. The korean guy next to me had three mats so I wasnt being that bad After 5am the same nonsense with the cellphone ringtones began. Different alarm ringtones would go off disturbing the entire floor, though it seemed like I was the only one to notice. By 6am I decided to just leave as there was no point in lying in and there would be a massive crowd when everyone got up. Its always fun waking up in a sauna seeing all the bodies lying passed out in unusual places. As I had taken the far corner I now had to step over everyone to leave this floor. At my locker people were passed out on the floor without the mats I had tried the massage chair the night before but they werent comfortable to sit in, let alone sleep overnight. Nonetheless, they were all full in the morning. It was good for a cheap nights sleep but dont expect a good nights rest. My biggest complaint is being a three level underground bunker there is nowhere to vent all the steam and body heat. Saunas are deliberately kept hot and this one was a sealed oven with no windows or vents. I had my own water bottle but this place didnt even have any dispensers to refill them. Me and my friend kept singing along to 'Happy Talk' with hand movements before we went but it didnt turn out to be such a happy event as it's name implies. It was ok as a one off but I probably would not stay at this sauna again given the choice and much preferred Dragon Hill on Friday nite.
