Deb's Adventures
Not much happened today. We looked for accessories for our fancy dress party. That was not very exciting to report on so I thought I would tell you more funny differences between Australia and America.
America versus Australia
Pharmacy = Chemist
Wallet = Purse
Purse = Handbag
Parking Lot = Car Park
Passing = Overtaking (they have overtaking lanes on the highway)
College = Uni (Short for University)
Windshield = Windscreen
Utility Vehicle = Ute
Swimsuit = Cozzy (Short for Swim Costume)
Oz Football League = Footy
Hiking = Bush Walking
Cup of Tea = Cuppa (which Australians enjoy several times per day)
Cotton Candy = Fairy Floss
Well Done = Good on ya (Sometimes you add a mate on the end)
McDonald's = Macca’s
Convenience Store = Milk Bar
Mosquito = Mozzie
Diaper = Nappie
Present = Prezzy
New Surfer = Shark Biscuit or Shark Bait
Food To Go = Take Away
Crawfish = Yabbie
I am having a blast but there are some things I miss about home. I miss Whole Foods and all the variety we have in our grocery stores. I miss US prices. Everything is really expensive here and I am paying an extra 10% with the poor exchange rate. I miss my dog, my house, my bed, my friends and my juicer. I miss going out for a reasonably priced lunch and having it served to me.
I miss US beer. Australian beer is very ordinary. I haven’t seen a brown beer or an interesting flavored beer since we got here. I have asked a few brewers and bottle shop keepers and they always say "you mean stout." No I don’t mean stout. They have no idea what I am talking about even when I try to explain it to them. The choices here are lager, bitter and occasionally ale or a stout. Beer costs between $16 - $20 for a 6 pack. I mostly stick with wine which is much better and much more affordable.
I do like the more layed back attitude in Australia and I have made a lot of new friends. It is really fun to have the opportunity to immerse myself into the culture. Ozzie’s are a lot more accepting and open-minded and a lot less tense than Americans. Lesley’s friends have been very welcoming to us and it has been a wonderful experience.
