The only reason the bus stops at Waitomo is so we can go black water rafting, the population of the town is about 42 people!! I was lucky enough to be in a group going Black Water rafting in the afternoon so we set off pretty much straight away and got kitted out! I really don't understand why they call it black water rafting as it has got absolutely nothing to do with Rafting its more like caving! First of all we had to absail down a 50ft black hole where a tree had once been into the ground which was pretty kool! After a short walk we then go to a flying fox (zip wire) were we flew from one side of the cave to the other in complete darkness - it was pretty funny when some of the girls went across because all you could hear was them screaming! After a sort stop for some hot chocolate we were then rubber rings and had to jump into the water in the cave from about three metres up! The water was absolutely freezing so the hot chocolate definately helped - for all of 2 minutes!!! We sailed through the caves on our rubber rings an had our head lights turned off so all that was lighting up the cave was the glow worms which was pretty cool! After a few stops on the way we sailed back up and got rid of our rubber rings and started to climb through the caves and up the waterfalls which was hard work at times, but the cold just kept you moving! We were black water rafting for five hours in total, and it was definately worth braving the cold for as it was a quality afternoon, everyone really enjoyed it!
After all the hard work we headed to the pub for a well deserved BBQ which wasn't as good as we thought and a few pints! Our driver taught us a another drinking game called three man which was pretty cool - i think i could write a guide book on drinking games the amount i've picked up!
The next morning while waiting for a group who were doing black water rafting we went to a rabbit shearing place which was a pretty strange experience and had a few games of volley ball before continuing on to Taupo!
