Bula!!! Fiji has been absolutely amazing and the people here are the friendliest people I have ever meet in my life who would literally do anything for you! I arrived on the 29th of April and just stayed in Nadi for one night before heading to the Islands. The time in the airport in Auckland was pretty eventfull, when I got there we had to evacuate! It wasn't anything serious however I did laugh when I heard a women on the phone telling her mate that there had been a bomb scare - some people do seriously go well over the top at times!! In Nadi I just got something to eat and chilled out at the hostel!
South Sea Island
The first stop was at South Sea Island which was tiny. Literally when we arrived and got off the boat I walked round the island which took a whole four minutes. South Sea Island had a lot of day trippers visiting the place which was pretty cool as they always had something going on. After the long four minute walk, I went on a submarine ride, which isn't as great as it sounds but hey at least I can say i've been in a submarine ... not just any submarine though, it was a yellow submarine!!! The rest of the day i just relaxed on the beach and played volley ball later in the afternoon. After the volley ball it was time to try some Kava which is a sort of pepper plant extract which the Fijians drink. They mix it with water and it looks like pond water, but tastes worse! It makes your mouth go really numb but it also has a sort of relaxing effect! On the night we had a few drinks and played a few different games which my team were particulaly poor at and led to us firstly having to swap clothes and then jumping in the pool in just our underwear!
The next morning we were woken up by a drum at 7 o'clock in the morning with the added sound of one of the staff shouting 'breakfast time!!!' Seriously mate i'm on holiday!!! Unfortunately this early morning wake up call was a sign of things to come! After breakfast i went out on a snorkelling trip and followed one of the locals who dived underwater and started making this wierd noise which i thought was a bit strange at first but the all of a sudden he was surrounded by hundreds of different fish which was pretty cool. I relaxed on the beach for a bit before getting bored and deciding to go kayaking around the island! As you can imagine this didn't take too long - a whole 15 minutes - so when i got back I bored a snorkel mask and went out again! The snorkelling was quality, probably the best I've ever seen as i'd got my timing spot on and all the fish were all out feeding on the reef! Unfortunately I also cut my foot while i was out there so i had a massive gash on the bottom of my foot which mean't I wasn't able to do much in the days that followed if it involved walking or standing up for too long! After sorting out the dodgy foot we watched a bit of coconut husking - KT i can now 100% confirm that if you peel the shell of a coconut it is infact brown and not green as you strangley believed so that is 5 drinks you owe me :p After the excitement of coconut husking I just sat on the beach and watched the sunset when i suddenly noticed something strange in the water! I walked over to have a look and there were loads of little sharks fins bobbing along - they are actually harmless but i wasn't going to go close enough on my own to find out! On the night we got invited to one of the locals digs where we all sat and drank Kave - which didn't taste any better then it had before, but when in Fiji you've got to do as the Fijians! South Sea was a really nice island and I had a quality time there, I would probably go as far as to say it was the best island i visited in Fiji!
Waya Lailai
We arrived on Waya Lailai about 10:30 the next morning, the island was a lot bigger then South Sea! There wasn't a lot I could do during the day so I just chilled out on the beach. On the night the staff put on a show about Reverend Thomas - the English guy who came over to Fiji - which was pretty funny in parts. They also showed us show traditional Fijian dress. After the show had finished I saw something which I had never before seen in my life ... as we looked out over the ocean we could actually see the moon rising which was pretty amazing!!
The next morning I went on a snorkelling trip where we got to snorkel with sharks!!! On of the guides actually caught one of the sharks so we all got to touch it which was pretty cool! Being inspired by this man I then found my self diving under water trying to catch a shark myself :s OK they were only reef sharks but they were still about 1 and a half meters long and still sharks! I actually managed to grab the one but before i knew it, it had left my hand and swam off pretty quickly. Later in the afternoon i went out kayaking again with a dodgy man made paddle because they had ran out of proper one's. It was literally a broom handle with a bit of wood on either end so as you can imagine it wasn't the easiest thing to use!! On the night we watched a dance show which included fire dancing and they also got everyone involved which was really good - not wih the fire dancing though, an you imagine me with a stick on fire with both ends??? Now thats just asking for trouble!!
Korovou
The next island we visited was Korovou which didn't have much of a beach but it had a pool which made a nice change! During the two days that I was there I did nothing at all during the day just chilled out and worked on the tan, which by this time was coming on pretty well and the girls who were doing the same tour had started to call me 'Dan the Tan'! During the night on the first day I had a few beers with a couple of English lads i'd met and we also had a limbo competition which somehow i managed to come second in - my back hasn't been the same since! On the second night we had a few games of cards but that was about as exciting as it got - by 10pm there was only four of us still up and we didn't last long after that!! Too be honest though the early nights in Fiji were probably needed after my time in New Zealand!
On our final morning in Korovou i just chilled out by the pool before a spot of crab racing! Crab number 8 wasn't taken so I had to go for my lucky number which did not let me down! After a slow start in the first race, he picked up the pace in the second and then in the third when there could only be one winner he romped home - I hope they have crab racing in Vegas!!! We then boarded the boat and headed to Coral View!
Coral View
Coral View was definately my least favourite island! Again there wan't much of a beach there so everyone just relaxed on the grass and it was so windy at times you'd be forgive for thinking you were back on Brighton beach!! On the first day I just chilled out in the afternoon and there wasn't that much going on, on the night either until I decided to take a trip to the toilet that is!! On my way there Dave - one of the Fijian blokes who worked there - started calling me over to him, so i explained that i needed a piss and he said I could go the toilet by where he wanted to take me! We walked to the edge of the grass where the beach was and i was getting a little worried! He then started to flash his torch on the beach so i just thought one of the girls who had some how managed to get so completely hammered she could no longer talk had go to sleep on the beach and he wanted me to help him get her up. It was then that i saw what he was looking for ... it was a black and white snake. So I had to ask him the question 'Is is poisionous?' thinking that he'd just turn round and say no there harmless, but unfortunately his response was not what i was hoping for as he said 'Yes very venomous'! Great i thought, you've just stopped me going for a piss to walk to a dark corner of the resort to stand by a venomous snake, thanks for that!!! He then pointed to a tree and just said 'You can go for a piss there!'
The next morning we headed off on our trip to the Sawailau Caves. The boat ride out was pretty cool as we went past lots of different islands and some of them were pretty amazing! The caves were also quality, but unfortuantely I couldn't get any pics as I didn't have an underwater camera - If anyone reads this who is going travelling that is definately the one thing I would recomend!!! On the night I had a couple of beers and games of pool with a few English lads i'd got speaking who were pretty sound.
Manta Ray
The next afternoon we headed to Manta Ray which was a really nice resort. The food there was absolutely amazing, we actually got to choose from a menu what food we wanted! Unfortunatley we only had one night on Manta Ray but it was a quality night! We had a little party on the beach that night and they put on a quality show which included knife and fire dancing. The fire dancing was unbelievable, it made the stuff on Waya Lailai look like childs play! One of the locals then got out his guitar and played a few songs which was pretty cool! The next day I was just chilling out on the beach when the staff started banging the drums and shouting "Manta Ray!" I shot up straight away as this mean't they had spotted a Manta Ray and we could go swimming with it!! We got all our snorkeling gear together and headed out on the boat to where it had been spotted and i wasn't disapointed - it was massive even the Fijians were pretty suprised at how big this one was! Its span was about the same size of my height then halved again!! We swam with it for about 30mintues and then i jumped back in the boat as i had to get back to board the transfer to my next island! As no one else was leaving who was swimming with the Manta Rays I was picked up on a Jet Ski and taken back to the island! It was quality, an Ozzy guy picked me up who worked on the resort and said he wouldn't go to quickly, but i told him to just go for it in which he replied, 'You better hold on then!' We literally flew back to the beach it was quality to this day i don't know how i didn't go flying off! I then jumped on the boat and headed to Beachcomber!
Beachcomber
Beachcomber simply mean't one thing - it was party time! I met up with Sam and Jason who i had met on the Kiwi Bus in NZ, and we let the drinking comence! On the night they had a bit of crab racing where you had to bid for a crab and the winner and second place won however much was raised! It come round to the English named crab and both Sam and Jase had decided they wanted it so they just kept bidding against each other which was really funny to watch as neither of them wanted to give in. Eventually Sam let Jason have the crab and then he just looked at him and laughed as he had just paid $25 for a crab!! And to make matters worse the crab didn't win, I don't think it even moved!!! At 12 it was offically Jasons birthday and a girl bought out a nice cake for him, which definately was not a good idea! Pissed up lads an cake equals only one scenario we could all see it coming, and then Sam started the ball rolling by smashing Jasons face into the cake which lead to a massive cake fight, mainly between the two of them!!! After cleaning up we had a few more drinks and tried to stay awake for the Chelsea game but all ended up just passing out!
The next day we were all really hungover so we didn't do much in the day other then sleep and chill out on the beach. The the fun started again on the night as it was Jasons birthday it would of been rude not to get back on the beer! We didn't actually get that drunk (or atleast we didn't think we were) but from what i'm about to tell you it's going to sound like we were all completely out of our heads! Late on in the night me and Sam for some reason decided to go an the dancefloor and just got completely stark b****** naked .. none of us actually know how this came about! The three of us then ended up doing a naked run around the island beofre finding the spa pool and jumping in it! After going back and finally putting our clothes back on, we called it a night which was probably for the best!
Seaspray
The next day I had my sailing trip on seaspray which was pretty cool! The sights were quality as we sailed around loads of the different islands before stopping off at the island where Tom Hanks filmed the movie Castaway! Unfortunately this was the same day my camera decided to stop working so i couldn't get any pictures!!! It was quality going around the island and recognising parts were bits of the movie were filmed, unfortunately however my quest to find Wilson ended in complete and utter failure!! We also did a bit of snorkelling around the island but i couldn't stay in the water for long as i just kept getting stung, which wasn't great! We then got back on the boat and had a superb BBQ lunch before heading off to visit a Traditional Fijian village. We were welcomed to the village with a tradtional Kava welcoming ceremony - luckily we had the choice of whether we wanted to try it so I opted out!!! We then walked around the village for a while before getting back on the boat and heading to the main land!
I'm now back on the main land in Nadi with Sam and Jason. Yesterday we headed into the main town and had a look in a few of the different shops and markets. On the night we had a few beers together as it was our last night and just chilled out with a few of the girls they had met here! I'm heading off to the airport tomorrow where i'm flying out to LA! I can't wait to get there and meet up with Mike and catch up with him! I've got a feeling there could be a few drunken nights on the way, especially when Chris joins us in Vegas!! Anyway I best be off, I would like to say i'm going to enjoy myself in the sun but unfortunately on my last day here its been overcast! Oh well I think i'm tanned enough already :p Speak to you all soon
