We left our beautiful free camp just out of Lake Argyle Village early, as we were up so early due to adjusting to the time change.
Our first stop was the visitors information centre, as we knew there was going to be so much to see and do and we needed guidance. Armed with different tour information we took off to see the sights. We went to The Sandalwood Factory and learnt about the biggest crop grown around Kununurra. We went past fields of chia in flower, it was an amazing sight, looking very much like lavender growing. After the Sandalwood Factory we drove just down the road to the Hoochery Distillery and yes we had to do some sampling, very nice drinks but pretty pricey. We then did a drive and walk up to the lookout which overlooks the town and surrounding areas around Kununurra. We then sat and worked out what tours we wanted to do and had organised two tours. Finally in search of a free camp we went back out of town to a lovely place that we would call home for the next four nights...... The Gravel Pit......
The next day we had a lazy morning as we had booked a flight for 2pm. We arrived for our flight only to be told they had booked us on two different flights..... were we ok with that???.... no we weren't. So left and was told to call them with alternative date and time and we received a free cooked breakfast for the inconvenience. Off we went touring town again and went to the Zebra Rock Gallery and went down to their jetty to feed the massive catfish, bream and turtles. Back home to the gravel pit....
Saturday morning was another early start as we had to meet our bus at the Visitors Information Centre for a 7am pick up. We spent a great day doing the Argyle Diamond Mine tour and yes had the best seats in the bus as we were picked up so early. They have finished mining in the open cut and are now mining underground. They will run out of diamonds by 2020 and then Rio Tinto will hand the land back to the local tribes of Aboriginals. We did this tour with Kimberley Outback Tours, David our bus driver and Margi our tour guide were both very informative and well worth the $215 each. We arrived back in town about 4pm and back home to the gravel pit.
Sunday morning at 9am we took off on our second tour......A flight over Lake Argyle, Purnululu Bungle Bungle Ranges, Argyle Diamond Mine, El Questro (flew over the up market accom where you pay $3200.00 p/p per night) ... Gravel pit looks good!!!! ....Cockburn Ranges over the mudflats at Wyndham were five rivers meet then back to Kununurra following the Ord River. Great flight, arriving back at 12.15pm. It was great to get such a different perspective of the mine and Lake Argyle and to see the beautiful Bungle Bungles. A great tour provided by Kingfisher Tours on a Shoal Air plane, certainly glad we did it..... all for only $415 each.
After such a great morning back home.... yes you guessed it. (not El Questro !!! )... the gravel pit to watch the V8's in Townsville.
On Monday morning we went to the Ivanhoe Cafe for a scrumptious cooked breakfast, compliments of Kingfisher Tours for the stuff up the other morning. Stocked up on food, went diamond shopping.... found 2 beautiful pink diamonds for a mere $149,899. So lets just say that no new diamonds entered the bus. Yes we were worried about our security... Not..more like the kids inheritance.
