On Wednesday 31st May we left Camooweal and drove an easy 400 km drive, always helps with a good tailwind. Good roads and no road kill for a change. We stopped the night at a tower 30km east of Threeways. Great camp site for the night with a fantastic sunset. Very windy here at the moment but we positioned DABUS so we could light a fire and put some potatoes and sweet potatoes in the coals to have with our veal schnitzel.
The following day we drove 370km with another strong tail wind again. Paid $1.71 for diesal at Threeways, dearest fuel price so far on the trip. Stopped at a large gravel pit just 45km short of Daly Waters. The next day arrived at Daly Waters pub at 10am, got a load of washing done and settled in for the day to enjoy watching other campers arriving. Full house tonight, pub has fantastic atmosphere, enjoyed happy hour then had Barra and Beef for dinner.
We spent the weekend at Mataranka, enjoying both Mataranka thermal pools and Bitters Springs. We free camped at the Old Gravel Pit on the Elsey Cemetery Road and commuted into the springs daily. Sunday morning Mataranka held their local market with Nathan "whippy" Griggs proforming his whipping show. Our favorite place here is Bitters Springs. Monday morning.....what a great way to start our day. Floating down the waterways of Bitters Springs. The wind was rustling through the palm trees and paperbarks. Many orb spiders had weaved their webs above the water, stretching from each side of the banks. Water reflecting onto the trunks of the paperbarks, whilst floating down the water listening to the birds and watching the tiny blue dragonflies hovering. Beautiful lotus flowers opening up, to show their stunning colours and the highlight is the view under the crystal clear water. Certainly a must if ever travelling up this way.......and ensure you have your noodles.
Monday morning we drove into Katherine, did some shopping and went down for a dip at the hot springs. Major works at currently happening here, it will be interesting to see the finished project. We then camped beside the Edith river for two nights, its a huge area that had about 14 vehicles in on the last night. We enjoyed the first day at Edith Falls. We hiked up to the upper pools for a dip before continuing hiking to complete the circuit. This hike is 2.6km with stunning views of the waterfalls. Then after lunch had a dip in the lower pools....water was cold but pleasant once in....
Saw our first dingo wandering on the side of the road before Adelaide River....Stopped the night at a WW11 Hospital site, the days are warm with a beautiful breeze.
On Thursday 8th June we went to Berry Springs Nature Reserve for a swim, only a few people here and we floated down from the waterfall to the lower pool. We then headed off to the Berry Springs Tavern for lunch before arriving at Keith and Wendys house in Howard Springs, where we were introduced to their new dog, Banjo....a staffy....so happy as we get our doggy fix...
