Great driving along the Gibb River Road. easy drive in newly graded track, our first experience of a river crossing awsome. Windjana Gorge fantastic campground running water hot showers, out door proper dunnies that flush !! all in the national park.
The rock face which is exposed through Windjana Gorge is a ancient reef system which is millions of years old going back to Devonion times. Fossils are still visable 40 metres up. This rough rugged harsh scenery is surrounded with delicate colourful flowers and the most beautiful butterflies. The walk through Windjana was 7kms and full of freshwater crocs we counted 20 just lazying around.
We left our van for the day to drive to Bell Gorge few more river crossing some slightly muddy tracks. Stunning scenery. One of the most beautful drives we have experienced as yet. Petrol here was super expensive $2.30 per L. Bell gorge another adventurious walk with a much rewarded dip in the beautiful waterfall pool at the end. We swam with a local Bungarra!! (massive lizard again Mmsy) un be known to us!! he popped up near us then plonked himself on a rock to sunbathe for a while before re-entring for a quick dip then repeating! just like how I love to spend a avo too. Like a lizard flat out on a rock.
Tunnel creek was a liitle spooky to begin with very dark and our torches werent to crash hot. We couldnt see very well made our way to the end of the tunnel, as we were walking through the last bit of water a croc joined us and we all s#*@ ourselves turned around and made our way safely back!! Beautiful photo oppurtuinty here this was a great gorge for the light creeping in created so many different shades of color along the water in certain spots! My I-phone took some great shots but would really love a fabby-dingle camera.
While staying here we made friends with Ranger Rob. He filled us in on a little story that happen here in 1894 and it goes alittle like this. There once lived a native aboriginal man named Jandamarra and he was quite the hero protecting his land and people from the european settlers who were trying to enslave the Bunuba people. He killed 2 stockmen to release his own people, and then there was a shot out in windjana gorge where he was injuried. He played a game of cat and mouse with the police making sure his people were safe and used tunnel creek as his hide out. He was now a out law on the run. After 3 years he was tracked down and killed by Mongo Mick. A few yeas ago all the Locals in Derby organised a reanctment play of this story and it was performed in Windjana Gorge the Ranger Rob said it was magnificent and wished it could be a anual event.
