Monday - we left lake Wanaka first thing. Eric got his hair cut for Xmas at the local barber in town and we headed to Queenstown over the crown pass, which is the highest road in New Zealand - budget Bertha struggled but made it ok. En route there were masses of wild lupins along the river - beautiful. We made it over the pass and headed into Arrowtown first of all, an old gold mining town which still looked like an old frontier town - and had great homemade pies which we ate at the edge of lake Hayes. We then moved into Queenstown on lake Wakatipu (third largest in New Zealand) surrounded by mountains ( the remarkables). It is incredibly beautiful here, the area is renowned for its skiing and its adrenaline activities, but even in the height of summer there is a real buzz to the place. We did our Xmas shopping and then moved to the campsite at shotover river which we had already booked. We just had a chill out evening ready for Christmas Day!
