Saturday - we finished up our drive round the peninsula this morning, getting ourselves thoroughly lost in the process- quite impressive given the small size and very few roads here! We very nearly ran out of diesel, but got off the rock just in time to find a garage - we were on fumes by then! Diesel here is really cheap, fortunately (given how many miles we have done), only £40 to fill the tank - bargain !!! We then went to Dunedin university (oldest in NZ) to have coffee with Alex, one of Claire's former students who is over here doing a Phd, they reminisced about Lincoln university and caught up on gossip - which was lovely. After saying goodbye to Alex we headed off to our next destination, Oamaru. On our way, we stopped for a cuppa by the sea in budget Bertha and was surprised to find ourselves next to some fur seals, so of course, out came the camera and Mrs Bailey decided to go on safari to get close ups of the seals. She did get some great pictures though - currently we have over a 1000 pictures!! Once in Oamaru, an old colonial settlement with some great old buildings, we went to find yellow eyed penguins on the beach - these are pretty rare and we could only see them from a distance. After this, we went to the blue penguin colony on the edge of town. There is a conservation programme going on here and each evening you can pay to sit in a small grandstand next to the beach to watch hundreds of blue penguins march up from a day's fishing to go to their nests at the bottom of the cliff - fab! Blue penguins are the smallest of all penguins, only 25cm tall and 1kg in weight - it was funny to watch them all waddling up the beach! By this point it was dark and way past our bedtime!
