We love Fremantle and all it has to offer. The beautifully restored old buildings and those that aren't and the narrow streets and all the secrets they hold. The round house was one such building.
We spent hours in the Maritime Museum and the replica HM Bark Endeavour which should be slipped in 4-5 months.
Fremantle Gaol had us spellbound, although it was very spooky. The sense of despair and hopelessness was everywhere and it was hard to imagine that people were able to endure such conditions. No wonder they rioted in 1988!!!! There were no toilets in the cells! “Moondyne Joe's” cell was a one off – lined with wood and covered with 6” spikes so he couldn’t get out. David Gilmour (a serial killer) had a three roomed cell so that he was totally isolated from everyone, his lawyer visited him in his cell and the passage in front of the cells was where he exercised. Clearly a horrible individual. There had been two attempts on his life while he was incarcerated. I believe the gaol was only closed some 15 months ago.
On 5th March Whitey and Simmo call in for a couple of hours on their way from Adelaide to attend a friend's 40th birthday.
We watched night surfing at City Beach, different to say the least but don't think it'll catch on.
Went to the Mint in the city to see if they had any coins or gold bullion hanging around. Indeed they di but strangely they don't give it away. Fabulous building.
Had a lot of fun10 pin bowling at Morley Bowl and honing my skills!
I was given my first golf lessons at City of Perth Golf Club and let's just say they didn't go well. Can't have been all that bad however as I was taken to Collier Park for some putting practice and I nailed it!
There were several fires around the park which also cause some consternation. We incorporated our evening walks to include the airport so we could people watch..........love it!
On 15th March Bet & Stu arrived for the royal visit. I was working some of the days so Kimbo was able to use my car while I was relegated to the moke, we didn't think that was an appropriate form of transport for them.
There was the obligatory trip to Kings Park, Cottesloe Resort for morning tea and a visit to Fremantle Gaol and of course a day trip to Rotto. This time we caught the ferry from the city so we could include the Swan River and view all the enormous houses that hug the river bank
. There was no riding of push bikes but a more civilised bus tour and we actually saw more than we did last time we were here and we weren't so knackered.
Next day we were up, bright eyed and bushy tailed for 7.15am pickup at Burswood for a day trip to the Margaret River region. This is how it went: Emu Tech Farm. Bunbury to see dolphins in Koombana bay. Explored Crystal cave at Yallingup.
Lunch @ Wildwood winery at Yallingup. At Prevelly Park guys were surfing and Kimbo wished he was out there with them. Boranup Forest for photo opportunity of karri trees and a quick stop at Margaret River to buy stuff. By the time we stopped at Bubbling Billy tea rooms at Capel for afternoon tea (nearly 200km from Perth) it was 6.00pm. We were finally dropped back at Burswood at 9.15pm!!!! We were all knackered.
I was grateful to be at work the next day for a rest. The other three Martins has a reasonably casual day heading up to Yanchep Koala Park and Underwater World.
A trip to the Casino was a given and we took a Swan River cruise to Tranby House probably not exactly what the guys wanted to do but a cruise is always wonderful. Bet and I visited historic Woodbridge House at Guildford while Stu & Kimbo played golf at Wanneroo with kangaroos.
Last night we went to Trains, Planes & Automobiles for dinner a quirky themed restaurant in Knightsbridge.
On 22nd March Kimbo dropped them at the airport and home they went. He was again home alone. I was thinking maybe it was time he started looking for a job.
