Szczecin has been a trading port since the 9 th century and today is the 7 th largest city in Poland. It’s still a major port and a ship building centre even though it’s a long way from the sea. Despite heavy bombardment during WW2 there are a lot of historical monuments to see dating back to the 14 century, they have made a route round them all, over 5 kilometres marked with a red line on the pavement 41 places of interest. We took 2 days cycling round. Our marina is only a few years old and is right in the city centre, a great place to be, the whole waterfront area has been improved and while we were there there was a festival of the sea going on. There had been tons of sand brought in and a huge beach area created with deck chairs and sun shades. We came here on our way back as there were a number of companies doing promotional events, one was free coffee and cookies, a nice way to spend some time in the sun watching the world go by. Moored up alongside was the tall ship Dar Mlodziezy a 100 m 3 masted square rigger, we went aboard and watched the cadets arriving and signing on for the next voyage, it was interesting watching the stores being loaded over the few days before she sailed, most of them hand loaded with a chain of willing crew. The biggest was 6 pallet loads of 2 litre water bottles, they took 2 hours to stow passing them up the gangplank.
