Brenton Kovacs's Travels
I take the train from Seville to Malaga. Its about 2.5 hours through some really nice countryside. By chance i was looking out the window when we flashed passed a magnificent looking gorge. So i connected to the internet to see if it was a place that i can get to from Malaga. Turns out it is called El Chorro. Yes it is a place that i can visit, but there is one problem. It is a very new attraction and only limited to 600 people a day. The tickets are free and can be booked online. The problem is its booked out solid for the next 2 months.
Anyway i arrive into Malaga, and the sun is shining and its a lovely warm 18 degrees. After walking to my apartment to check in, unpack and get out and explore.
Its a great little seaside town. Has lovely old pedestrian only streets, its clean and well laid out. First impressions are i like what i see. Lovely lanes and alleys and most are tiled with granite or marble, not cobble stoned. This makes for a nice change, especially wheeling a suitcase.
A walk down at the harbour is especially nice, plus there are some really pretty and lush green gardens. Plus there are plenty of noisy quaker parrots flying around, and its so nice to see some bird life.
A trip to the Castillo de Gibralfaro reveals some wonderful views overlooking Malaga, including the bull fighting ring.
Now as i am about 150ks from Gibraltar, i decide to rent a car for the day and drive myself. Turns out this option is cheaper than the bus.
Its a 2 hour drive and once i arrive at the border a passport is necessary to enter Gibraltar. You have to drive across the main runway to get to the town. I drive to the very southern most point and have some lunch. Next task is to climb to the top of the rock. This is easier said than done, but its not too hard a climb. Plenty of macaque monkeys hanging around for a free feed. The views are brilliant, and you can see Northern Africa across the ocean. Pretty cool place to be.
What made this trip even better was the cost. The hire car was only $20 plus $15 for fuel to do 300ks. The car was a little Toyota Aygo, so frugal on fuel.
Unfortunately for me i have developed a rather nasty cold, so i was laid up for a day trying to rest and recover. My next stop is Granada.
