Brenton Kovacs's Travels
The bus to Vilnius departs half an hour late. Not big deal as we still arrive on time. The drive is very scenic with lots of green. The bus company i have been using is Lux Express. Very comfortable buses with your own tv screen, free wifi, free movies, free espresso coffee, which i have to say is rather good especially from a machine.
Its a half hour walk to my shared accommodation. The lady i am staying with is Violeta. She is not happy when i arrive as i forget to tell her what time to expect me, whooops. Anyway she shows me my room. which is really neat. I hit the streets pretty quick and am impressed at what i see.
Well i am having to deal with a heat wave for the next few days. Normally the high for summer is 26-28c, but the city is having to deal with 33-35, which is a heat wave according to the locals. So this morning i climbed the Upper Castle ruins and lookout, thus avoiding the heat. Then i spent a fair bit of the day wandering inside lovely, cool air-conditioned shopping malls. Plenty of people with the same idea, as some of the malls were quite busy.
With some glorious days ahead, one is spent in the little village of Trakai. Its a 45 minute bus ride from Vilnius. The highlight is Trakai Castle. Such a picturesque, tranquil place. Plenty of tourists here. The small village is also a nice place for walking.
There are plenty of parks in Vilnius, all are very beautiful and i spent many hours wandering through the parks. The walk up the hill to see the 3 crosses was hard, but short. The views were great. The little stream running through the main park was such a nice place to sit and watch the ducks feed.
Well that brings my visit to Vilnius to an end. I have really enjoyed my stay here and have found the old city to be one of the nicest i have visited. Its very clean and quiet. It isnt overcrowded with tourists, so its a pleasant place to walk. The food here has been brilliant, and cheap. This i will miss. Tomorrow i a have to get up early and be on the 8am bus to Warsaw. I am looking forward to visiting this city.
