Brenton Kovacs's Travels
The ferry to Tallinn is packed with people. I manage to lug all my luggage to the top deck to sit and watch the voyage across the Baltic sea. Lucky its a calm day and the ship is not rolling around. My host in Tallinn has offered to pick me up from the ferry terminal. Piret is her name, and she manages to find me in amongst the hundreds of people disembarking. She has a really nice apartment on the 4th/top floor in an old style apartment block. Nice, new and modern inside. After a quick tour Piret heads back to work and i unpack once again.
The apartment is not too far from the city, so i will go for a walk there tomorrow. But for now its off to the supermarket for some supplies.
I thought i might sleep in this morning as the bedroom has good blinds, but unfortunately i wake early. Today i made my way into the old town and spent most of the day wandering around. Its a really nice and fairly compact town, still in good condition considering how old some parts of the old city are. Some parts date back to 1200AD.
By late afternoon its come up cloudy and cools off a bit, so i call it quits and walk back home.
Another great day walking the streets of Tallinn to see the Palace. The forecast is for a cloudy wet day, but its sunny. The weather forecasters do get it right as by the evening it started to rain and is still raining at midnight.
My next few days are spent wandering this lovely quaint city. The weather has been a lot better than the forecasters predicted, with plenty of sunshine and nice warm days. The language barrier has not been a problem as most of the young people speak english fluently. Its the older people that dont understand one word.
There are parts of the city that have many derelict buildings, and plenty of Soviet built apartment blocks. Very dull and boring to look at. I am staying in one, but it has been renovated inside. There is a lot of new construction happening here, with some really nice apartment buildings being built. The Ferry Terminal is always busy with cruise ship or ferries from other countries.
Well thats it for Tallinn. Next stop is Riga, Latvia
