Brenton Kovacs's Travels
25th
Today we fly yo Lisbon, but not till 6pm. We do some walking before sitting in La Rambla street for a while, taking in the nice warm sun and do some people watching. By mid afternoon the streets have become crowded again. Now its off to the airport.
The flight to LIsbon with TAP is a good flight and arrives early. We take the subway to our apartment where our host Margarida is waiting for us. Her place is nice and in a quiet area just a few ks from the centre Lisbon.

Its so much quieter staying out in the suburbs. We dont wake till welll past 8am, great sleep. Opening the widow shutters reveals a glorious sunny day. This apartment has a nice courtyard so we sit outside for breakfast even though its only 6 degrees. The day will later warm up to 15.
So we set off on a marathon walk, around 15ks in total. We walk a huge circle of the city trying to take in all the attractions and sights along the way. The Park Edwardo is not only a beautiful park but offers stunning views of Lisbon and the sea. We head down the Avenue Da Liberdada, a very wide tree lined boulevard where all the super expensive shops are. Its nice and relatively quiet with not many cars or people about yet.
Lisbon has 2 old towns, one area is Baxia and the other Alfama, Both are really nice cobble stoned lined streets winding up and down the hill. Some parts are quite steep. There is the number 28 tram that runs between the 2 districts. Its very old and we will ride that another day.
We take a walk along the waterfront where you can see the Abril Bridge. It looks an exact copy of the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco. Well it was designed by the same person, so from a distance it looks identical.
We find a nice little cafe for lunch. A bowl of soup of the day, 2 cod fish cakes, a Portuguese tart and a coffee came to 5 euros. So cheap compared to Spain. Portugal does make claims it is the cheapest western europe country. Lunch is good and we enjoy the rest.
There are some great vista points dotted around the old towns, some with small with cafes and lots of people enjoying the beautiful day. The main square, Praca do Comercio is very big, surrounded by beautiful buildings and a magnificent Arch.
Well by now the sun is setting and seeing we are only a few kilometres from home we walk rather than take the subway. Really enjoyed Lisbon, its not a big or modern city, but it has a lot of old world character to it. Plus not being packed with people like Barcelona makes it very pleasant to walk around. Will sleep well tonight.

Our luck ran out with the weather this morning. Its a cloudy day, but no rain. The day is spent wandering the old town cobbled streets. The streets are very crowded today and the number 28 Tram which is apparently worth riding on is packed, so we pass.
By late afternoon the city is packed with marathon runners. It seems there is a marathon race on this evening, there are 10,000 runners.
Well by now we have seen enough today so its home time for tea.

The Lisbon airport is fairly close to the city which makes it easy to get to and from, but the noise woke me this morning. There were a lot of early flights and the jet noise carries a long way. Oh well hadto get up soon or later. The days should be a nice, but as i open the shutters i am greeted by cloudy skies. We attempt to visit the AquaDuct but that turns out to be a waste of time. So we grab the subway and visit a huge shopping mall. Lucky as it starts to rain a little.
The mall is huge and packed with shoppers. Dont buy anything but spend a few hours walking around. Nothing else exciting today
